▶️ WHAT I DO– Reach Out – Engage – Lead – Collaborate & Build Partnerships – Solve Problems – Strengthen Community through diversity and inclusion▶️ WHY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT I chose Social Work because I was interested in the Macro Practice -- working with communities and groups to better our communities. At the Division of Emergency Management (DEM), it’s our responsibility to work with the whole community; cities, counties, tribal partners, private sector, and non profits to better prepare for the worst-case scenarios. I cannot see any practice which is more beneficial to our communities than preparing and building resilience for disasters. 🔺 I firmly believe that if we are resilient in the face of the worst, we are better prepared for the day to day challenges we face. ▶️ MY CONTRIBUTIONMy biggest impact has been improving our “customer service.” As a state agency, our mission is to support all Nevadans. Within our vision is the objective of ensuring equitable recovery from disaster to Nevada. 🔺 Applying my Master of Social Work perspective, I communicated what “ensuring equitable recovery” truly means during our strategic planning discussions. The result? We updated the statewide disaster recovery strategic plan to add support for volunteer and nonprofit agencies.▶️ MY PERFORMANCE REVIEW “Ethical decisions are an integral part of Emergency Management and Ryan has demonstrated his comprehension in helping to review DEM policies and procedures to help them become more culturally competent.” “Ryan has performed intensive research, analysis, and engagement of intersectionality within the policies of Division of Emergency Management. DEM is not a traditional Social Work placement and as such Ryan has had the opportunity to bring a new lens to DEM. Through active conversations with the staff of DEM Ryan has been able to further elaborate on the intersectionality of the communities which DEM is responsible in supporting during emergency incidents.”
