Researcher in the lab of Professor David Walt, focusing on the research of bead-based microarrays for the detection of DNA and RNA isolated from pathogenic bacteria and viruses. -Designed hundreds of oligonucleotide microarray probes and PCR primers, cultured BSL-2 microbes, and used lysates to test sequence specificity. -Developed methods for multiplex PCR and microarray hybridization, optimized stringency conditions for maximum specificity. -Designed and tested methods for animal stool, and human saliva samples; large volumes of water (10+ L) necessitated integration with continuous flow centrifugation.-Optimized protocols to couple oligonucleotide probes to glass, polymer and latex microbeads, and cellulose.-Developed protocols to silanize (wet and vapor) PDMS and glass optical fiber bundles to reduce non-specific binding or couple oligonucleotide probes.-Responsible for drafting and submitting updates to NIH, EPA, NIDCR, NIAID, and NATO.-Presented results at multiple conferences, meetings with collaborators, and graduate level courses. Mentor for 20+ undergraduate students through HHMI-funded program for educational outreach and the development of novel laboratory activities in undergraduate and high school settings.-Selected and tested SNPs in human mitochondrial DNA, challenging due to high mutation rate and repeat content.-Developed mitochondrial DNA genotyping assays based on Illumina GoldenGate for maternal ancestry study of 100+ volunteers. -Adapted SNP genotyping techniques to single- and multi-day experiments.
