Fire Safety Engineering Research Post (Phd)The University Of Edinburgh Feb 2011 - Feb 2015Bre Centre For Fire Safety Engineering, University Of EdinburghThis work is split between individual (PhD) research and a number of larger group fire science research projects (including large-scale testing of travelling fires in safe design for tall structures). PhD-focused research involves studying the flame boundary fluid dynamics of cross flow plumes as well as flame dimensional analysis, with particular interest in entrainment for non-ambient smoke development. Smoke production is typically underestimated by traditional calculation methods for non-ambient plumes, which can result in dangerously under-designed smoke control systems. This has practical application for smoke control, smoke detection and heat detection in both controlled and harsh environments. It is imperative that when designing smoke control systems or modelling fire development for modern infrastructure, that the full extent of the potential smoke production rate due to the complexities of such infrastructure (such as HVAC systems, non-ambient environments) are fully understood and can be incorporated into the computational modelling technique.I currently have several papers in draft or review stage with peer-reviewed fire science journals.
