About Ryan Hoerr, Ph.D.
My primary research interest lies in investigating gas adsorption at the gas-solid interface, particularly in the context of direct air capture (DAC) of CO2. For my dissertation, I focused on analyzing the kinetics of adsorption in mesoporous, amine-loaded silicas. Building upon this work, I aim to continue exploring this research direction by utilizing a logistic-like kinetic model to gain insights into the underlying adsorption mechanisms.In addition, I am intrigued by the design and practicality of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for DAC. I would like to incorporate the uptake kinetics of these materials into my logistic-like model. Furthermore, MOFs show promise for catalytic applications in dry methane reforming, which I intend to explore.Lastly, I have conducted research on activated carbons (ACs), with a specific emphasis on the preparation of ACs from waste plastics and their capacity to sorb certain pharmaceutical compounds. Through this work, I have discovered a fascinating approach to producing magnetically responsive ACs from waste plastic. I intend to investigate the feasibility of these materials for adsorbing pollutants in water, as their magnetic retrievability would be advantageous for addressing oil spills or removal of wastewater pharmaceuticals.
