Intern

The Choptank River, located on the DELMARVA penninsula, tributary to the Chesapeake Bay, is experiencing significant nitrogen and phosphorus pollution primarily from manure runoff from farmers in the Choptank River Watershed. The manure used on the farms is readily available from chicken farms in the area looking for ways to decrease the chicken waste products. Because of the ease for the farmers to use this manure, over spreading often occurs. One potential tool that may come out of the hydrologic and hydraulic modeling effort of the NWS is a fertilizer forecast tool, similiar to the tool that is offered in the state of Wisconsin, which alerts farmers of reccommended and high risk times to apply fertilizers to the fields. In order to produce such a tool operationally, the Hydrology Lab Research Distributed Hydrologic Model (HL-RDHM) was used, which was connected to a HEC-RAS model which routed the surface runoff downstream, and modeled the affects of the tides of the Chesapeake Bay using information available from the National Ocean Service (NOS). I worked closely with the Development and Operations Hydrologist (DOH), Seann Reed, to develop the model, starting from a lumped SAC-SMA (Sacremento Model with Soil Moisture Accounting) model to calibrate the land use and hydrologic characteristics of the watersheds of interest using CHPS (Community Hydrologic Prediction System), then applying these calibrated SAC-SMA parameters to the HL-RDHM which applies the SAC model using a 1/4 HRAP (Hydrologic Rainfall Analysis Projection) grid for the hydrology, rutpix9 for hydrologic routing between cells, and sno-17 for cold season processes. I presented my work on the Choptank to a variety of vested parties. To learn more about the Choptank Habitat Focus Area (HFA), visit the my personal website here: http://ryanjoneseng.weebly.com/internship-with-the-national-weather-service.html
