I am the co-founder of Third Derivative (the climate technology accelerator of RMI), subject matter expert in innovation structures (incubators, accelerators, venture studios, prize programs etc) and tech commercialization, author of "Accelerate This!", and faculty at Singularity University where I lecture about energy and climate futurism. The global, 18-month program coordinates commercialization between our corporate partners (Wells Fargo, Microsoft, AT&T, Berkshire Hathaway Energy, Shell, BP, BASF, FedEx, Netflix, Disney), 15 venture capital partners and our portfolio of 198 startups, who have raised over $1.5B.My book, “Accelerate This! A Super Not Boring Guide To Startup Accelerators and Clean Energy Entrepreneurship”, was sponsored by The World Bank, Asian Development Bank, World Wildlife Fund, and New Energy Nexus, and details the best practices of Y Combinator, Techstars, 500 Startups, Google X, and other top innovation programs from around the world. I lecture about climate and the exponential pace of climate innovation at Singularity University and formerly I was Network and Curriculum Lead at New Energy Nexus, founding team of the Free Electrons global utility accelerator, advisor to Carbon180’s CarbonTech Lab, founder of The Oceantech Community, and mentor at Techstars Energy and Big Ideas Ventures. I teach Energy Futurism: The Inevitable, Incredible Path To 100% Renewable Energy (Sooner than you think… but not fast enough), Accelerators: What’s an accelerator? Incubator? What’s the difference? How does an accelerator actually work?, Climate Science 101: Are we going to be ok? How do we know what we know? What’s the history, and the future?

Accelerate This! A Super Not Boring Guide To Startup Accelerators And Clean Energy Entrepreneurship Nov 2018 - Present
Soooo, what is an accelerator, and how do they actually work? What's an accelerator versus an incubator, prize or venture studio? Are they worth it for entrepreneurs, companies, and investors? What pieces of advice should ALL entrepreneurs know (according to the experts)? "Accelerate This!" answers these questions.Sponsored and endorsed by The World Bank, Asian Development Bank, World Wildlife Fund, New Energy Nexus and the California Clean Energy Fund, my book takes you behind the scenes and shows you the secret sauce of programs like Y Combinator, Techstars, 500 Startups, and over 70+ other programs from all over the world. What do these programs do to grow some of the most successful startups in the world? I asked, distilled the most common answers, and put them in a super not boring format into the book. Entrepreneurs, regardless of industry or geography, can benefit from proven methodologies like Lean Startup, Business Model Canvas, Customer Development and more. This highly visual, thoroughly researched and super not boring book cuts through the confusion so you can:- Understand accelerators from the perspective of an entrepreneur, investor, organization, or government- Learn how to grow your idea into a business through Lean Startup, Business Model Canvas, Customer Development and more - Understand if an accelerator is right for you- Create an accelerator program (or run yours better)Get a free chapter and learn more here: wwww.acceleratorguy.com/bookPurchase print, Kindle and Audible versions here: http://bit.ly/accelerate_this

  • Carbon180
Accelerator And Fund Architect For The Carbontech Labs
    Carbon180 Jan 2018 - Jan 2019
    Washington, District Of Columbia, Us
This is one of the most important accelerators I’m supporting right now. To be direct: without a significant amount of carbon removal/carbontech, life on Earth will suffer immeasurably. Aka, even if we stopped polluting today (which we are not - we will hopefully peak emissions around 2040 and then decline until almost 2100), this is completely necessary. This pro-business, for-profit approach by CCR is exactly right, and I encourage anyone serious about the world and climate to come and get educated on this completely cutting edge field of tech.

  • Burning Man
    Carbon Offset Antagonisto & Chief
    Burning Man Oct 2015 - Jun 2017
    San Francisco, Ca, Us
We all have a side hustle. Ideally they are some sort of passive income thing that greases the wheels while requiring minimal management time. This project took a ridiculous amount of time, was emotionally draining and paid nothing. Smart. And yet, it has been one of my proudest accomplishments. Long story short, as a long time Burner I felt that we were derelict in our duty to be Leave No Trace as a community, conveniently ignoring the big, fat trace we were leaving in the atmosphere mainly (80%) through vehicle emissions and thereby part of the problem in terms of global climate change. I started a change.org petition, got the board to recognize carbon pollution as part of BM's trace, and then created and ran a carbon offset program for two years, in partnership with C-Quest Capital and TerraPass. That program is now being managed by Black Rock Labs from within BM itself, and my negative profitable side hustle has matriculated beyond me. Victory! ...sort of. It's still a voluntary program, so unless 100% of festival goers pony up and proactively buy an offset, Burning Man is still leaving a trace. Stay tuned.
