In order to adhere to the permits set and enforced by the Environment Agency, a variety of gas and water sampling is undertaken at numerous closed landfill sites across North Yorkshire. Coupled with various analytical methods, the monitoring activities are able to determine compliance with these permits, as well as identifying exceedances and environmental impacts from landfill activities. Reporting the results from monitoring closed landfill sites is a key part of maintaining compliance and contributes to aftercare projects within Yorwaste. These are largely done through excel spreadsheets and written reports that are sent to the Environment Agency, as well as environmental occurrence reports and site inspections. This ensures that all permit requirements are met and as a result this fufills the main responsibilities of my role. As Environmental Monitoring and Compliance Technician, I have to be highly independent and have great time management skills. As a result there is a huge emthasis of Health and Safety within my role, and I must be competent with the use of a lone working device; risk assessments and visual observations. Health and Safety aspects of the business will continue to be expanded onto my role. Other skills I have developed include waste acceptance and operating certain liquid treatment facilities. I worked here full time whilst I pursue other jobs related to my discipline in Environmental Science. My responsibilities included stocking shelves with merchandise, additionally I was involved in stock control and management. I regularly had to keep up to date with special promotions and it was my weekly responsibility to put up these displays. Being helpful and polite allowed me to assist customers to find the products they are looking for as well as answer any queries. I am now able to directly deal with customer complaints due to the length of time I have worked at Proudfoots. In December 2014 our supplier NISA, undertook a mystery shopper assessment looking at how the staff interact with customers and general quality of the shop. I was part of this assessment in which we achieved a 100% satisfaction score. Show less

Identifying the presence of UK native grassland plants in an area under the Enviromental Stewardship Agreement though structured walk through and phase 1 habitat surveys. This will allow us to create a baseline study observing plant abundance and diversity over time: with reference and future studies to soil; water and gradient analysis.

I was fortunate to have acquired work experience with the Scarborough Borough Council's Coastal Protection and Environment department; especially because I was able to transfer the skills I learnt from the GIS module into a large scale project. The goals of this project was to create a large data-set detailing every recorded borehole within the Scarborough Borough District, initially past consultancy papers were analysed and appropriate details were then recorded onto a Microsoft excel… Show more I was fortunate to have acquired work experience with the Scarborough Borough Council's Coastal Protection and Environment department; especially because I was able to transfer the skills I learnt from the GIS module into a large scale project. This data was then transferred onto an ARC GIS map with each borehole appearing as a point on the map. These points are then hyperlinked back to the related consultancy report. The outcome was successful and the map is currently on the North East Coastal Observatory website for open access use. I was also fortunate to be involved in some practical work with the senior coastal officers; this included investigating cliff instability along south cliff. We recorded cliff instability through various measurements and taking photographs of for example new cracks along public footpaths. Show less
