Mervin designs, manufactures and sells snowboards, skis, surfboards, skateboards and related apparel and accessories globally under the Lib Tech, Gnu, Roxy, Bent Metal and Freedom Dolly brands. I had previously been employed by their parent company Quiksilver, Inc. and was appointed by them to structure the business for growth, develop new strategy, and upgrade key talent. I remained as a Quiksilver SVP until 2013 when I partnered with a private equity firm to buy the company. Following the 2013 sale, I led the transition from wholly owned subsidiary of a public company to privately held, stand-alone business. I provided strategic and tactical leadership to a team of 300+ through 7 direct reports, and held full P&L accountability. During my tenure, we grew top-line sales 100% while increasing EBITDA 160% and we were named Transworld Business’s ‘Brand of the Year.’Keys to this success included growing international sales from 24% of revenue to 37%; launching a direct-to-consumer e-commerce business; diversifying the product line; restructuring the organization; and managing strong marketing and branding campaigns. As a result of this success, I orchestrated an open auction sale of company and attracted 4 private equity firms who all conducted due diligence and submitted purchase offers. The eventual sale was for a 6.8x multiple on EBITDA.

Quiksilver designs, manufactures and distributes branded apparel, footwear and accessories globally under the Quiksilver, Roxy, DC Shoes brands. I had been working in China (see below) before earning promotion to serve as the company’s first head of business development with global accountability across 17 brands and all three geographic regions. I managed strategic partnership building, licensing, film/TV/book deals, M&A due diligence and integration, brand building and cost reduction/organizational efficiencies. I also served as a member of the Quiksilver Brand Committee, played a key role in sustainability initiatives, helped establish the Quiksilver Foundation, and helped to integrate and/or grow emerging brands. In this role I reported directly to the CEO and was a key player in revenue growth of almost $500M over a 3-year period. My contributions included replacing a fragmented approach to licensing with a cohesive global framework, and adding millions in revenue by identifying/closing multiple new opportunities. I also streamlined the company’s approach to corporate partnerships, creating a clear, centrally directed effort that resulted in fewer, more lucrative partnerships and a consistent global marketing message.During this time, I also worked closely with McKinsey and Co. to identify and execute a series of global cost saving measures that added $17M to the bottom line.

Oct 2006 - Jun 2009

Marketing Director

In 2003, I moved to China as only the second employee of this start-up joint venture that designs, markets and sells the Quiksilver, Roxy and DC Shoes brands throughout mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. I served on the executive management team and devised and executed 3-year strategic plans for Hong Kong and mainland China. I led a team 12 employees and 6 agencies with accountability for producing all advertising and marketing materials including seasonal ad campaigns, catalogues, direct marketing, look books, newsletters, point-of-purchase displays etc. I also assisted with product development and oversaw selection of new retail locations and store design. Over a 3-year period, we grew the business from start-up to $28M in revenues, 500 staff, 40 retail locations, and approximately 10 wholesale accounts. I forged co-branding projects with leading international brands including Motorola, Heineken, and Nokia, and built brand awareness through creative strategies. For example, I produced a record-breaking live event that generated enormous media and online coverage. 400M people watched Danny Way jump over the Great Wall on a skateboard with the event broadcast live in China and globally via CNN, BBC and ESPN.

Oct 2003 - Sep 2006

Marketing Manager | Events Coordinator | Sales And Marketing Assistant

Huntington Beach, California, Us

I was originally hired as an assistant but earned promotion within one year to lead all marketing activities for the Quiksilver and Roxy brands in the Americas, managing a multimillion-dollar marketing budget. In this role I led a team of 16, oversaw events, negotiated licensing agreements, and worked closely with sales and global marketing teams.
