My wife and I along with our two dogs just recently moved to our new home outside of Van Meter. Went to a small school in southwest Iowa, Nodaway Valley (Greenfield). Received my undergrad from Simpson with degrees in Marketing and Corporate Communications and worked in marketing for 4 years until I changed career paths after presented with an opportunity to work with students again. I have a passion for making a difference in the lives of students and I am not satisfied until I see students succeed. Being a school counselor is not a job, it's a calling.I joined Ankeny Community School District in July 2020. I am a professional school counselor at Northview Middle School 8/9 serving students last name H-O. I was previously a middle school/high school professional school counselor at my alma mater, Nodaway Valley. I served approximately 350 students from 6th-12th grade and enjoyed every day of it. The personal relationships I got to develop with the students, getting to know them individually, was so valuable to help assist them in their lives. Before that I was in the classroom for seven years as a substitute teacher while finishing graduate school for a masters degree in professional school counseling to become a school counselor. I substituted for every subject from core classes, SPED, ELP, At-Risk, P.E., art, music, etc. in the WDMCSD. Substitute teaching has been a tremendous experience where I have been able to work with and connect with thousands of students over the years. The students have been a huge inspiration for me and it's been a pleasure watching them grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Having worked as a licensed sub and school counselor, I bring a unique perspective to my position.My hobbies are very similar to those of students I work with. I collect LEGO mini figures and build the sets, play video games, listen to all genres of music (except polka music), obsessed with attending movies the day they are released, reading young adult fiction, gadget guru - especially Apple, and a social media junkie. Always up for good place to eat and love me some BBQ. I may be 36 but I’m pretty much a kid at heart!
