About Ryan Wolfe
I am currently an M.Sc. Candidate at the University of Toronto, studying ecology in the Rollinson Lab. My thesis revolves around estimating the population size of blue racer, an endangered snake species, in Ontario and analyzing ongoing restoration efforts to better understand the best management practices for creating suitable habitat for the species. My work extends beyond my academic studies, as I collaborate with many other organizations such as Wildlife Preservation Canada, Natural Resource Solutions Incorporated, and Ontario Nature, to continue conservation efforts for the blue racer. Partnered with my background in environmental science, my current work is guiding me along a career path in conservation biology, where I hope to use my passion, and the knowledge that I have developed, to continue protecting the species of animals that call this world home. More specifically, I wish to perform research, and implement and develop restoration and reclamation strategies for ecologically significant species and ecosystems.

Msc Student
CurrentIn 2019, I designed and developed my research project on the blue racer snake for my master’s degree candidate study and, in 2020, I partnered my research with several other organizations to increase conservation potential and address knowledge gaps for the species in Ontario. In its early stages, this entailed heavy literature review, experimental design, and the writing of successful grant proposals. Since initiation of the research project, I have overseen annual permit applications, report writing and submission, and the coordination and leading of field teams for mark-recapture and habitat restoration assessment studies. This includes visual encounter, artificial cover object, and road mortality surveys for snakes, as well as vegetation and thermal model surveys and assessments before and after habitat restoration efforts. In addition, I oversee all training of field staff in appropriate handling and processing techniques of all animals, including morphometric measurements, blood sampling, and PIT tagging. Upon yearly completion of field work, I enter and analyze all data collected from species at risk, vegetation, and thermal model surveys. Currently, I am completing a mark-recapture analysis of population parameters and size for blue racer, and I will continue performing all required tasks for this research until the end of the project in 2022.
Conservation Technician
My employment with Ontario Nature started as an internship during a Co-op placement for my undergraduate degree. Upon completion of my Bachelor of Science, I was hired on a full-time contract as a Conservation Technician. As a conservation Technician at Ontario Nature, I gained invaluable experience in the areas of conservation management, plant and wildlife surveys, report and grant writing, and public outreach. During my time in this position I was able to lead and assist in ecological land classification surveys and mapping on Ontario Nature's nature reserves. I also spent time leading and assisting field staff in species at risk survey work for reptiles and amphibians, birds, and butterflies across Ontario Nature properties and in locations where research projects were ongoing. In addition to field work, I was trained in writing management plans, funding grants, and government and funding reports. I wrote several nature reserve management plans during my time at Ontario Nature and multiple successful grant proposals such as TD Friends of the Environment and Habitat Stewardship Program. Mixed in with all of this work, I officiated and supported multiple outreach and training events with Ontario Nature members and the public, which provided me with critical skills in connecting nature and research with the public and other organizations.
Species At Risk Research Assistant
As a species at Risk Research Assistant at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) I was trained, developed skills, and performed tasks in both research and field work. During my time in the research aspect of my position I created several documents on mitigation measures for species on site, contributed to Environmental Assessments (EA's), as well as created and prepared necessary forms and documents for the field work I did during the field season. In the field work component of my job I was trained on surveying techniques for wildlife such as birds, bats, herpetofauna, and fish, and gained immense amounts of experience surveying, collecting and analyzing data. Within my time of employment at CNL I was also put in charge of onboarded summer students as they assisted with the field work that needed to be completed. In addition to my advancements in knowledge of working with wildlife, I was provided with the opportunity to be a part of forestry work on site. I performed large forest plot surveys as well as minor plant surveys where I learned to identify multiple species of trees and other plants and learned how to measure and assess a tree's health.
Grounds Maintenance
My time at Hamilton Regional Conservation Authority has included valuable labor and customer service experiences. As ground maintenance staff, the majority of my summer was spent maintaining outdoor hiking trails, cutting grass, trimming trees, and re-graveling paths. I spent the remainder of my time here working at the front gate or in the main trail center concession stand. Working in both of these areas, I developed my customer service and interaction skills as well as my cashier experience.
Line Cook
As a Line Cook at Cora Ancaster I was responsible for the cooking and preparation of our customers food. I am able to work efficiently and diligently while continuously multitasking, fulfilling multiple orders at one time.
Subcontractor
As a subcontractor I would partake in the construction and renovations of homes, and the interior spaces of homes. Being able to use and operate a multitude of tools and machinery was essential. From Subcontracting I have also gained much experience in time management and working toward customer satisfaction.
Library Page
As a Page working for the Hamilton Public Library I developed a strong self motivation as the majority of the work was done individually. However, I also had much experience assisting and running the children's programs and activities. Through which I have developed excellent communication skills, coordinating and working with the library staff, the parents, and children. In this job position I received excellent performance reviews for working quickly and accurately as well as for being a team player.
