Profile bio

About Ryan Wolfe

I am currently an M.Sc. Candidate at the University of Toronto, studying ecology in the Rollinson Lab. My thesis revolves around estimating the population size of blue racer, an endangered snake species, in Ontario and analyzing ongoing restoration efforts to better understand the best management practices for creating suitable habitat for the species. My work extends beyond my academic studies, as I collaborate with many other organizations such as Wildlife Preservation Canada, Natural Resource Solutions Incorporated, and Ontario Nature, to continue conservation efforts for the blue racer. Partnered with my background in environmental science, my current work is guiding me along a career path in conservation biology, where I hope to use my passion, and the knowledge that I have developed, to continue protecting the species of animals that call this world home. More specifically, I wish to perform research, and implement and develop restoration and reclamation strategies for ecologically significant species and ecosystems.

Msc Student

Current

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

In 2019, I designed and developed my research project on the blue racer snake for my master’s degree candidate study and, in 2020, I partnered my research with several other organizations to increase conservation potential and address knowledge gaps for the species in Ontario. In its early stages, this entailed heavy literature review, experimental design, and the writing of successful grant proposals. Since initiation of the research project, I have overseen annual permit applications, report writing and submission, and the coordination and leading of field teams for mark-recapture and habitat restoration assessment studies. This includes visual encounter, artificial cover object, and road mortality surveys for snakes, as well as vegetation and thermal model surveys and assessments before and after habitat restoration efforts. In addition, I oversee all training of field staff in appropriate handling and processing techniques of all animals, including morphometric measurements, blood sampling, and PIT tagging. Upon yearly completion of field work, I enter and analyze all data collected from species at risk, vegetation, and thermal model surveys. Currently, I am completing a mark-recapture analysis of population parameters and size for blue racer, and I will continue performing all required tasks for this research until the end of the project in 2022.

Conservation Technician

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

My employment with Ontario Nature started as an internship during a Co-op placement for my undergraduate degree. Upon completion of my Bachelor of Science, I was hired on a full-time contract as a Conservation Technician. As a conservation Technician at Ontario Nature, I gained invaluable experience in the areas of conservation management, plant and wildlife surveys, report and grant writing, and public outreach. During my time in this position I was able to lead and assist in ecological land classification surveys and mapping on Ontario Nature's nature reserves. I also spent time leading and assisting field staff in species at risk survey work for reptiles and amphibians, birds, and butterflies across Ontario Nature properties and in locations where research projects were ongoing. In addition to field work, I was trained in writing management plans, funding grants, and government and funding reports. I wrote several nature reserve management plans during my time at Ontario Nature and multiple successful grant proposals such as TD Friends of the Environment and Habitat Stewardship Program. Mixed in with all of this work, I officiated and supported multiple outreach and training events with Ontario Nature members and the public, which provided me with critical skills in connecting nature and research with the public and other organizations.
