The Hoepfner Research Group at the University of Utah operates under the direction of Professor Michael Hoepfner. His research is focused on utilizing a wide-array of characterization and modeling tools to understand the phase behavior, aggregation, deposition, and precipitation mechanisms of complex systems, such as flow assurance in petroleum pipelines.Research Assistant▪ Synthesized colloidal gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using Turkevich method▪ Set up & executed the days experiments by utilizing AuNPs, various reagents and light to create hydroxyl radicals, which degrade an organic dye (model water contaminant) over time▪ Collected & analyzed samples using UV-Vis Spectroscopy, recording peak absorbance and wavelength▪ Interpreted data by comparing normalized peak absorbances (concentration) to determine which combination of reagents produced the best degradation of dye in a specific trial▪ Accomplishments: improved cooling/ventilation system for the reaction apparatus by increasing air circulation; brought new strategies to optimize data analysis and interpretation
