Having spent nearly two decades in the food, beverage, and hospitality industries, I decided to trade in my apron for a desk. Restaurants are busy and fast-paced, requiring excellent time management, multi-tasking, and prioritization skills (as does getting a college degree, which I accomplished while working full time). While the job may seem largely independent, very few tasks are successfully completed without the help of the entire team including support staff, management, and heart of the house workers. During my management roles, I took great pride in developing my employees' own skills and acting as a liaison to handle interpersonal conflicts. I was able to quickly adapt my customer service and upsell skills to inside sales tactics, account management, and working in an office environment. Turns out that memorizing menus and drinks is not much different than learning new product specs and adhering to company SOPs. The steps of table service are essentially the same steps of sales just with different nomenclatures. While attending university, I learned many computer skills and became well-versed in the Microsoft Office Suite. I also got very used to learning new software programs very quickly. These skills helped my transition immensely as I was tasked with tracking leads (eventually clients) in CRMs and SaaSs. I was able to successfully meet revenue goals, KPIs, and personal growth goals.
