Medical And Clinical Research Assistant

Manhattan & Brooklyn, New York

Eager to rejoin the academic aspect of medicine, but unwilling to sacrifice the ability to interact personally with patients, I have taken on a new position that provides me with the unique opportunity to pursue both.As I continue working as a medical assistant to multiple spinal surgeons, my role within the specialty of orthopedics provides two key elements: it not only allows me to develop a thorough understanding of the branch of medicine I hope to pursue as a specialist with a bioengineering background, but with the sophisticated background of orthopedic spine surgery to refine my skill set.I am a firm believer that the highest quality care can only be provided by not only having a thorough understanding of medicine, but strong communication and interpersonal skills as well. Assisting in patient care as a medical assistant offers a tremendous opportunity to develop both of these traits.Ambitious to further my involvement in medicine, however, I also function as a clinical research assistant on days where patients are not being seen. During this time, my responsibility is to collect, analyze, and detect potential correlations between variable components of patient medical histories and how these may influence the outcome of surgical procedures. This includes lifestyle choices, such as smoking, to different conservative approaches that were attempted before surgical interventions. These factors are then analyzed against statistics which quantify surgical efficiency, such as recovery time, the rate of occurrence for side effects or complications, patient satisfaction reports, etc. The potential correlations are then examined, and the most promising are chosen as a focus for further clinical study.Analyzing specific components of medical histories and the potential impact they may have on surgical outcomes allows me to play a vital role in the advancement of medicine, helping further improve the quality of care that can be provided to patients.

Medical Scribe

Shore Orthopaedic Group

Tinton Falls, Lakewood And Manahawkin, Nj

As a medical scribe, it is my responsibility to quickly, efficiently, and accurately input medical information for patients in order to maintain a current EHR (Electronic Health Record). Cataloguing this information electronically allows physicians to have access to previous surgeries, medical conditions, and an overall portfolio of the health care their patients have received in order to treat them in the most beneficial manner, improving the quality of care given. This also means that when transferring to another physician, all past health history is quickly obtainable through the EHR so patients are not required to have the physical documents sent over to each individual doctor, hospital or practice that may require them during treatment. Patients are also able to access their own EHR online, allowing them to see exactly what they have been treated for, who performed the procedures, when and where they were performed, etc., allowing them to track their own progress which previously had been extremely difficult to do.As a medical scribe, I also shoulder a great deal of work and documentation that normally takes doctors away from their interactions with patients. By eliminating this time normally reserved to catalogue the updated medical records, the physicians are then able to spend it instead on talking with the patients, obtaining a better understanding of the issue, and therefore able to provide better health care and ultimately a higher quality of life. My role as a medical scribe also allows for extra support in preparing patients, whether it be by obtaining vital signs, confirming medications, previous operations or noting any family history, helping to maintaining the most current, accurate, and detailed health records. This also provides me with the ability to talk with patients directly, learning how to interact in a professional manner and gain insight as I pursue the title of "physician" myself.Website: http://www.shoreortho.com

Biomechanic Laboratory Research Assistant

University Park, Pa

Easily the best experience I have had as a student at the Pennsylvania State University, my work as a research assistant in the biomechanics lab under Professor John Challis has allowed me to develop my interests and hone in my skills in one of the best available facilities for graduate and scholars to perform research in the fields of human motion in sport, health and disease. My responsibilities include prepping subjects, recording data, aiding in the processes of each experiment, motion analysis work and analysis of data. Ongoing research has included my help in the use of ultrasound to correlate pennate fiber insertion angles of the gastrocnemius to force generation and the use of several cameras and programs to analyze the gait analysis of over 200 subjects in a ground-breaking study that aims to focus on injuries to running-athletes over the course of their lives. From http://www.biomechanics.psu.edu/index.html:"The present day Biomechanics Laboratory, with roots in both the traditional Biomechanics Laboratory and the Center for Locomotion Studies, boasts an illustrious history of accomplishments. Over 70 Master of Science and over 70 doctoral students have completed their degrees to date and are contributing to the progress being made in this relatively young scientific field. 72 visiting scholars from 27 foreign countries have participated in the research programs of the laboratories for periods ranging from two months to two years. The Biomechanics Laboratory hosts a broad array of research foci that encompass several sub-domains of the discipline... Major thrusts include the application of biomechanical principles to motor control and neurological problems, understanding how muscle properties dictate the coordination of movement, exploring the mechanical behavior of musculoskeletal structures at the tissue level, and exploring innovative solutions to orthopaedic problems."
