About Ryan Scafuro

I am an independent filmmaker and director of photography working in London and New York, and a member of Local 600 Cinematographers Guild in the US and BAFTA Crew in the UK. With over 20 years of industry experience, my work has been featured at the Sundance and Tribeca film festivals, broadcast nationally, and has collected numerous awards along the way. Throughout my career I have worked on projects ranging from social issue documentaries to political satire comedy shows, all contributing to a unique perspective on storytelling where compassion and humor work side by side.My most recent films, Phantom Cowboys (2018), American Renaissance (2015), and Bending Steel (2013) have all premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and have gone on to screen in cinemas worldwide. The feature-length Bending Steel aired on DirecTV in the US, won both the Emerging Cinematic Vision and Audience Awards at the Camden International Film Festival, and received a nomination for the Cinema Eye Honors Spotlight Award. On the small screen, I was a director of photography for the Emmy Award winning Daily Show with Jon Stewart for nearly 10 years, and have recently been brought along by former Daily Show correspondent Samantha Bee to lens her new late night show on TBS, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee.I am an owner/operator, and am available for hire on both union and non-union narrative and documentary films, television productions, commercials, and branded projects.

Full Frontal With Samantha Bee Dec 2015 - Present

After Jon Stewart announced his departure from "The Daily Show", there was much speculation as to who would take over his position at that famous desk. Instead of sitting down in the chair, Samantha Bee said f*** the desk all together and went on to start her own late night show on TBS. I've had the pleasure of shooting the show's premiere season with a very talented and seasoned team of producers, writers, and crew."One of the most unique and visible comedic voices on television comes to TBS in 'Full Frontal with Samantha Bee'. Breaking up late-night's all-male sausage fest, this new show from the longtime "Daily Show" correspondent features Samantha's nuanced view of political and cultural issues, her sharp interview skills and her repartee with world leaders."

We are currently wrapping up our final shoots and will be submitting to festivals for the 2017 circuit."The debut feature documentary from award winning narrative filmmaker Daniel Patrick Carbone. "Phantom Cowboys" is a celebration of youth in transition across three small American towns, seen through the eyes of the boys who call these places home."
  • The Daily Show With Jon Stewart
    Director Of Photography
The Daily Show With Jon Stewart 2007 - Aug 2015
    Greater New York City Area
Ever since I was a naive college student, it had been a dream of mine to shoot for Comedy Central's "The Daily Show". Through some dumb luck I landed that opportunity in 2007, and have worked as a director of photography on the show right up until Jon Stewart's departure in 2015. It still is hard to believe I had the privilege of working with such talented people, and being a part of such an iconic television program. During my time with "The Daily Show" I worked directly with their producers and correspondents for field pieces and additional content, helping to craft a comedic style and look that the show pioneered. I also traveled internationally for stories, and shot their well known "Indecision" election and political convention coverage."An Emmy and Peabody Award-winning comedy show that takes a reality-based look at news, trends, pop culture, current events, politics, sports and entertainment with an alternative point of view."

After a long 3 years of production with a very small but talented group of friends, the film saw it's world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2013. It went on to screen at festivals worldwide, and was broadcast on DirecTV in 2015. The film can now be streamed or downloaded from iTunes, Amazon, and Hulu."'Bending Steel' is an intimate feature length documentary exploring the lost art of the oldetime strongman, and one man’s struggle to overcome limitations of body and mind."
  • New England Cable News
    Photojournalist • Cinematographer
New England Cable News Oct 2001 - Jan 2006
    Greater Boston Area
During my time in Boston, I worked as photojournalist and cinematographer at New England Cable News, an award winning regional news network. My proudest work at the network was as director of photography for a group of Emmy and Edward R. Murrow award-winning social issue documentaries:The film "Just Married" (2004), documented the epic legal and political battle that was fought as Massachusetts became the first state in the nation to recognize same sex marriage. "Part of My Soul” (2005), which explores the Khmer Rouge genocide through the eyes of a woman returning to her homeland of Cambodia for the first time, won an Emmy Award for long form production. And “Hidden Wounds” (2006), a film about soldiers returning from the war in Iraq with Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome, picked up both an Emmy and an Edward R. Murrow Award in the news documentary category.
