During this PhD I worked both in the lab and at the desk, performing experiment and the theoretical calculation necessary to form predictions.In general, this has been an investigation into the radiative lifetimes of certain excited electron states of the chalcogen selenium acting as a donor atom in a silicon host lattice.The theoretical part has has involved the use of basic quantum mechanics, variational calculations in a multi-parameter minimisation problem, and Fermi's golden rule to calculate radiative lifetimes.Experimentally this required FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectroscopy), time resolved FTIR, and general optical table work, the use of cryogens (liquid nitrogen and helium), high vacuum systems, and the use of high power wavelength tunable ns pulsed laser systems.
