About Ryan Sutter
I got into writing software early, as in elementary school early. I grew up coding on anything I could get my hands on: Commodore VIC-20, Apple II, Radio Shack TRS-80, it didn't matter. I liked writing software. When I graduated high school I went to a technical college to become a software developer and I started my first job on my last day of school at the ripe old age of 20. That was almost 30 years ago and what a career it's been so far. My first production application ran in DOS, my latest runs serverless out on the AWS cloud. In the meantime there was the advent of the web, the rise of Java, the rise of mobile apps, the cloud, agile engineering practices, AI, machine learning, Linux, and so much more. I've been there for all of it with a front row seat, building applications, leading teams of engineers, designing solutions to challenging problems, and having fun doing it.I'm a big believer in collaboration, communication, transparency, and working with other people in as egoless a way as I can manage. I lead by example, don't ask others to do things I wouldn't be willing to do myself. This has created a lot of long standing, trusted, professional relationships over the years. I'm a lifelong learner and I'm aware that despite all I have learned, there is always more to come.As great as that has all been, it's not the whole story. I'm not just technical, I'm also creative. I firmly believe that creative pursuits help maintain neural plasticity, develop lateral thinking, and bring joy. This is likely because I am a musician from a family of musicians. I operate a small recording studio and record label, and I have performed with a lot of bands and written and released a lot of music. It has been my experience that quite a few software engineers are also creative types. I have found that writing software is a creative profession that requires lateral thinking and the ability to generate ideas just like coding. Working in an IDE is not as unlike working in a recording studio as you might think. I have other creative interests as well. I draw and paint, I do photography, and I have even made a few films.I'm an animal lover, I love the outdoors, and I collect and tinker with vintage cars and technology.
