About Ryan Tisthammer

I am an operations engineer for MISO with considerable RTO control room experience. After six years on shift, I now work in a daytime role with a focus on driving the business forward through collaborative and in-depth project work and mentorship. I have not abandoned my growth mindset in this senior role, however, as I still enjoy learning more about the industry and aim to develop further as a reliable contributor and potential leader.As an operations engineer, my experience is principally in maintaining and improving the systems that facilitate reliability coordination. For example, I am skilled and, in some cases, accountable for managing the functions, parameters, and inputs to MISO’s state estimator and contingency analysis (RTCA) as well as other aspects of the energy management system (EMS). I am similarly responsible for maintaining the online transient stability and voltage stability analysis tools (TSAT and VSAT). I also regularly assist operators across MISO’s three offices with real-time operation and am continually developing a greater understanding of MISO’s entire footprint; my understanding of the MISO North region is particularly strong given my continued work in MISO’s Eagan, MN office. While employed, I earned an Electrical Engineering MSE from ASU Online. This features an “Electric Power and Energy Systems” specialization and has allowed me to sharpen my understanding of power system stability and dynamics while exploring other facets of the industry including energy markets, renewable energy systems, and nuclear power plant operation.
