About Ryan Van Lenning
My work is to hold space for remembering what has been forgotten and reconnecting with what has been severed—within ourselves, with nature, and with others. I am passionate about facilitating authentic re-connections with nature and our deepest selves to assist in the work of repairing broken belonging and dismantling oppressions.I do this primarily through nature connection/ecotherapy, 1-on-1 inner & outer wilderness guiding, rite-of-passage ceremony, and poetry/writing. I am a certified ecotherapist through The Earthbody Institute, where I teach the Level 1 Ecotherapy training, and Founder of Wild Nature Heart. My book Re-Membering: Poems of Earth and Soul and High-Cooing Through the Seasons, a collection of haiku was released in September 2018. My work has been published in Earth Island Journal, Deep Times: The Journal of the Work That Reconnects, the book A Walk with Nature: Poetic Encounters that Nourish the Soul, Terrain Magazine: Northern California's Environmental Magazine, Elephant Journal, various poetry journals, Oakland Local, & Truthout, Huffington Post, The Progressive, Global Exchange's Climate Justice Blog, and Food First. Previous careers include: communication work (both as staff and as a consultant) with a variety of non-profits (environmental and affordable housing); grassroots social change organizing, ranging from door-to-door canvassing for GOTV, anti-fracking, and anti-war campaigns to public transit and urban agriculture work; and teaching Philosophy, Critical Thinking, Environmental Ethics, Comparative Religions at a community college.Among non-paid, but equally important, work, I have co-organized anti-war "plant-ins" in Oakland and San Francisco, helped to organize a food justice bike tour for 10/10/10 Global Day of Action, organized neighborhood parties/fundraisers to benefit Causa Justa :: Just Cause and Phat Beets Produce. I host the East Bay Return to Earth Meetup.Fun Fact: I hiked 500 miles in the Sierra Mountains along the Pacific Crest Trail in 2013.
