Ryan is the engineering manager of the Customer Onboarding team, responsible for creating systems that help customers get access to the imagery and data products they've paid for faster, building self-service tools for customers to configure and delegate product access, and automating the provisioning process for new users to the platform.He also started an internal coaching practice to help develop and support employees across the company.

In 2021, Ryan led the Analytics arm of Tableau’s Dev organization in a massive security uplift involving 40+ teams to ensure the suite of products met government cloud security requirements. In addition, he led a development team building customer-facing mapping features in Tableau. The team’s scope of work included running production AWS services (monitoring, alerting, updating) and building new spatial data connectors for Tableau. He also built an internal coaching practice focused on supporting underrepresented employees across the Salesforce Dev organization.

Ryan led teams of software engineers, data engineers, PMs and external vendors to deliver new functionality to Tableau. In this position, he worked on Mapbox Vector Tile integration and the creation of an Esri geospatial data connector.

In his role as manager of the Map Data team at Tableau Software, Ryan led a team of 5 engineers responsible for keeping Tableau's built-in map data up-to-date. Ryan was one of the original developers to work at SpatialDev, joining a core group of colleagues departing from CH2MHILL/Critigen. He was a consultant and full-stack web developer, creating interactive web mapping applications and creating custom data processing workflows and ETLs for clients such as NASA, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The American Red Cross, Catholic Relief Services and the International Food Policy Research Institute.Ryan worked with technologies such as PostGreSQL, PostGIS, Mapnik, AngularJS, D3, Mapbox Studio, MapboxGL-js, MapboxGL, Mapbox VectorTile Spec, Node.js, ArcGIS Server, ESRI Javascript API, Drupal, Tableau Javascript API and SalesForce API.Ryan also created PGRestAPI - a Node.js API that sits on top of a PostGIS database to dynamically serve GeoJSON and Vector Tiles. Ryan also helped to create Leaflet.MapboxVectorTile - a Leaflet plugin that renders Mapbox Vector Tiles on top of the map using a canvas layer.

CH2MHILL sold its GIS consulting group to create a stand-alone company called Critigen (now Locana). Ryan worked there for 2 months before helping to start a new consulting company - Spatial Development International.

As a courtesy clerk at the Spanaway Safeway, Ryan's primary responsibility was to ensure that customers' groceries were packed efficiently, making sure to protect sensitive food items from being damaged: for example, ensuring eggs weren't packed underneath cans of Progresso Chunky Soup. This involves "building a compartment" first using boxy/sturdy items such as boxes of cereal or crackers. After walls are constructed thusly, more vulnerable items such as produce, unboxed cookies, etc could be nested inside of the compartment for protection.Ryan developed a bagging technique in which his left hand remained inside of the bag being packed, and his right hand could toss sturdy items like cans and boxes to that hand from the conveyor belt, speeding up bagging by 70%. Ryan's bagging efficiency made him a sought-after employee - often being called by name during particularly high-traffic times to help quickly process customers and orders.Other responsibilities Ryan enjoyed at Safeway - collecting carts from the parking lot in all weather conditions, including rain and snowstorms, emptying outside and inside trash bins, and cleaning the bathrooms.His bagging efficiency, determined and all-weather cart-retrieval, and his no-nonsense and particularly effective approaches to other tasks such as sweeping the floors earned Ryan the 2nd-ever 'Courtesy Clerk of the Month' award in October 1995. (Ryan thinks he should have won the first ever award in September, but seniority and courtesy clerk politics meant the award went to a 10-year veteran courtesy clerk first).Highlights of this position include being asked by a child if he "was a boy", being told he resembled "a young Michael Jackson", and finding a $20 bill floating in "Lake Safeway" - a large, gas-tainted puddle that would accumulate in the parking lot after a rainstorm.
