My office was the first in Arizona to complete the assignment without any need for a recount.• Opened the East Valley Office including procurement and build-out while onboarding employees, directly and indirectly, taking appropriate action regarding hiring, promotions, and reassignment. Takes disciplinary action when necessary.• Communicated vision and direction daily with internal staff such as Area Manages, other ACO Managers, ACO staff, and related statuses and milestones to staff in Dallas.• Ensured that the quality and quantity of work produced was monitored and controlled to meet rigid schedules and quality standards.• Responsible for continuous review and analysis of cost, performance, and progress reports; makes critical decisions to meet deadlines and to control spending.• Used networks and built relationships with traditionally hard to enumerate populations to complete the census in an equitable fashion.

Over ten years (2006-2016), there have been more than 900 deaths due to heat in Maricopa County. There have also been almost 11,000 deaths due to heat in a six-year period (2008-2014). The valley is one of the hottest metro areas in the country. We have identified an area in Mesa that is considered one of the three hottest neighborhoods in the valley. People at greatest risk for heat-related illness and death include infants and young children, the elderly, people who are overweight or who have existing medical conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease, people who are socially isolated, and the poor. The neighborhood we are working in is located right next door to downtown Mesa, has been impoverished for decades, is 50% Spanish speaking, and is generally ignored by city hall. It is our task to engage and educate the neighborhood with the outcomes of developing methods and activities that lead us to a heat action plan that we can submit to government entities around the state. • All community outreach including digital and physical engagement with targeted residents resulting in solutions that will lead to a long-term plan to create a healthier environment for areas found to be significantly hotter, across the valley and to incorporate those strategies into regional planning efforts.• High levels of neighborhood activation, coordination, and planning of events with all officials, stakeholders, neighbors, community members, and the general public.• Project success depended highly on participation and engagement from community members.• Data was collected, reviewed documented resulting in a formal Heat Action Plan presented to City and County officials. Final Programmatic Reports were completed and presented to appropriate parties at the end of the contracted period. This document was used to create climate policy in Mesa and the team is still presenting these findings at conferences.
