About Ryan Mcdonald

In the work environment, technology ranks with air, water, food, and shelter. It is what makes work possible. For an organization to thrive, it relies on consistent, reliable performance and information security. I am a creative thinking innovator and information technology leader bringing a broad range of experience to help complex organizations do more with less. I’m also an infrastructure and architect Subject Matter Expert. I fold in project management expertise and 22+ years of experience into solutions and architecture that results in fast, secure, and dependable networks. Dependability means fewer problems, lower operating costs, and increased productivity. As a collaborative business and technology leader, I leverage my IT expertise, project management, and data architecture skills to guide teams, to work cross-functionally, and to put complex problems on a fast track to resolution. I embrace an empowerment-leader model because it is an effective means to unleash an employee’s latent talent and challenge themselves to push the envelope. It fosters their growth, builds common bonds, and achieves desired outcomes. It also tends to make work more enjoyable. And I have long since learned to break down complex, technical concepts into understandable language that users can digest and, conversely, translated user requirements into comprehensive technical projects and plans. I dare say this is a talent that not all engineers have mastered, and I am grateful for landing somewhere on the talent spectrum, between deep analyst and effective communicator. The scale of projects and responsibilities calls for keen financial management over multi-million-dollar budgets. My skill in managing budgets has lowered costs without trading performance. This also brings high service levels to our stakeholders. Here are some notable achievements as a leader, innovator, and strategic technology champion:➣ Developed and Deployed COVID-19 Work-from-Home Infrastructure, During Merger, Within 6 Weeks.➣ Tech Leader Building Secure Private Network in 3 Days and Tearing it Down for Annual Convention.➣ Migrated Entire Data Center infrastructure with No Notice and No Loss of Service.➣ Streamlined and Reduced Processes from 12 to 1 and Labor by 20% for Cargill Global IT Network Performance and Operations.➣ Stood up Offices in London and Shanghai w/ Complete Infrastructure, Data Rooms, Hardware Migration. If you’re a like-minded professional and would like to share ideas, stories, or opportunities, I would love to join your network! I was new to this role but the bank, however, was beginning a significant merger with another institution, one that would double its size. I jumped right in and led a series of profound technology changes for the organization. As that transformation was in progress, the nation was struck by the COVID-19 pandemic and it created a seismic shift to the work paradigm. I pivoted between priorities and helped 95% of our workforce transition from working onsite to remote access with no loss in productivity. My overarching mission now is to ensure fast, safe, and secure exchange of information by overseeing architecture and integration of enterprise-wide network infrastructure. Projects normally cross department lines so my leadership and collaboration skills go a long way. A lot has happened in a short time and here are a few key accomplishments so far: • Earned rare 4-star performance rating for leading effort to merge TCF and Chemical Bank while concurrently managing COVID-19 response initiative that allowed 95% of the workforce to work remotely.• Reduced infrastructure footprint 15% and improved performance and data integrity by migrating mainframe backend system to a security-compliant cloud for more load capacity, flexibility, and easier changeouts. • Equipped 4000 users with remote access by pivoting priorities and initiating new 1 GB bandwidth circuit that offered reliable connections for an unprecedented shift to the new work pattern.• Guided system engineers to achieve a 5-minute response time by adapting system area protocols that monitored performance, sent detailed alerts and allowed for intervention.• Put year-long load balancer project back on schedule within 30 days by assessing the situation, resources and moving the initiative from dormant to full utilization in 6 months.• Saved $250k annually by eliminating unnecessary renewal fees for unused software. • Improved response time 15% and reduced false positives 30% through continuous improvement.

It’s not often a person gets to go back and finish what they started but I was fortunate to have that happen to a certain degree here. With a change in senior leadership and renewed emphasis on technology, I was able to leverage my intimate knowledge of the issues surrounding infrastructure and systems to lead new strategic initiatives and clear the way for business expansion. By redesigning 20-year-old network structure, I was thrilled to usher in the kind of function, capacity, capability, security and even an efficient disaster recovery scheme that I had longed to do in years prior. My efforts resulted in a highly available, adaptable, and fault tolerant network infrastructure. My team and I did a lot and some of our notable achievements include the following:• Introduced next-gen information security and backup by creating end-to-end disaster recovery plan utilizing Infoblox DNS traffic control (DTC) and OTV/VXLAN to facilitate contingent business operations. • Reduced annual program costs 60% and solidified network security by researching and implementing Cisco Umbrella company-wide to inhibit multiple DNS attack vectors that also saved $350k/ 5 yr. lifecycle. • Helped open new markets by incorporating HIPPA compliant standards into the network that allowed the business to interface with customers in healthcare and related industries. • Significantly reduced risk from application threats by implementing F5 Application Security Manager (ASM) and Application Policy Manager (APM) to improve performance compatibility and 7-layer protection. • Increased network monitoring and security by designing next-gen firewalls with Cisco ASA/Firepower infrastructure and configuration that integrated more visibility, web blocking, layered protection and VPN.
  • Gander Mountain
    Senior Network Engineer
    Gander Mountain Jun 2014 - Mar 2015
    Lincolnshire, Illinois, Us
In every experience, there are worthy takeaways and even though the company itself was in a period of organizational instability, I worked to stabilize the technology infrastructure and managed a rapid succession of changes during significant transitions. I exercised good leadership and project management principles to lead design, execution, and documentation of networking best practices that kept information available as the organization contracted. To effectively identify and develop solutions for numerous risks and compliance issues, I utilized my technical expertise and positioned the technical support team to address future challenges. Here are a few notable achievements that helped bring order out of chaos:• Shaved 2 months off deadline goal to move entire enterprise data center by employing Agile project management methodologies to achieve the operation with 0 downtime and 0 impact to the business. • Drove network security and performance by creating project plan to mitigate 1500 unique PCI audit violations within the first 30 days of employment, developed budget, contracted with professional services.• Reduced risk exposure for 150+ stores by creating security incident response and business continuity plans and implementing security policies, mechanisms, and systems to support of retail locations.
  • Be The Match Operated By National Marrow Donor Program
    Senior Network Engineer
Be The Match Operated By National Marrow Donor Program Sep 2013 - Jun 2014
    Minneapolis, Mn, Us
In the lean-operating world of the nonprofit sector, I was the sole network technology resource for a 1000-member organization spread across 15 sites. This experience was a great proving ground for thinking outside the box and developing creative solutions on shoestring budgets. I relied on creative thinking to innovate and meet a steadily rising demand for services. The greater challenge was in holding the line on new spending and to fashion ways to keep aging systems at peak performance, which I did. I also managed vendors, professional service providers, and drove consensus from internal stakeholders to gain their buy-in and manage expectations. Highlights of this position are as follows:• Increased processing speed and reliability by partnering with infrastructure, development, and architecture teams to implement WAN accelerators and network monitoring features. • Developed CACTI on a shoestring budget, as an out-of-the-box monitoring system.• System ran on a Linux server and adequately served the company for 7 years. • Authored complete documentation so other administrators could manage it.
  • Dorsey & Whitney Llp
    Network Engineer
    Dorsey & Whitney Llp Jul 2010 - Sep 2013
    Minneapolis, Mn, Us
The various positions I held prior to this role helped me to secure the position and transition from capable engineer and technical SME to that of a program leader and creative solutions specialist. By exercising a keen ability to gather business requirements and foster clear communications between user groups and system engineers, I effectively managed and completed multiple, high visibility projects simultaneously. I also facilitated end-to-end remote moves and wrote documentation to fortify continuity between system engineers. I also became an early innovator of enterprise BYOD with Cisco ISE. Accomplishments include:• Helped balance tight budget constraints and absolute deadlines to meet rising system and user needs by developing open-source enterprise monitoring tools such as CACTI and Splunk, for reliable system support. • Resolved significant infrastructure availability & reliability challenges by engineering and implementing an industry best practice and standards-based approach for an enterprise network infrastructure.• Reduced spend 15% and significantly improved WAN reliability by implementing a global, highly available MPLS with DMVPN backup.• Stood up Offices in London and Shanghai in record time, complete with infrastructure, cooling for data rooms, hardware migration, and ensured operation to customer satisfaction.
