About Ryan Mckenna

I’m the Executive Product Manager for Graphics & Automation at the BBC Technology Group. I’m responsible for a portfolio of broadcast graphic production products. Products are used by internal staff at the BBC, or automated to use data that drives visuals on TV programmes and streams. A key focus for me is in using web and cloud technologies to solve traditional broadcast problems. For graphics this means to control, to preview and output visuals using web tech. Since starting this role in the summer of 2021, I’ve been developing a product strategy for interoperable graphics across the BBC, and a standard for web motion graphics in broadcasting. I’ve recruited a team of freelance developers to assist in developing these products, co-ordinating their workload and taking a hands on approach to developing using AWS & javascript-based full-stack tools. My experience includes frameworks such as Vue.js, React.js, Express.js, lit-html, Socket.io and MongoDB. I also enjoy using GSAP, SVG & Lottie for animation. RowZed is our tool for driving HTML motion graphics, using end-to-end web technologies. Users across the UK add live graphics through the web app, mainly on BBC Sport TV and streams. The app was vital during covid lockdowns allowing producers to add match graphics remotely on coverage of the FA Cup. It has also been developed to render files for highlight edits as part of a “Sustainable Productions” IBC Accelerator project. Video file rendering is done through Chrome Puppeteer & FFMPEG. Manifesto is an election graphics system used by BBC Scotland. It has been used to cover eight overnight votes since 2015, driving augmented reality Vizrt graphics, fullforms and lower thirds. It also allows digital teams to render image files for social media, or launch a “tweetbot” for automated result graphics. It was recently used for the 2022 US Midterms, driving all-HTML graphics for the first ever BBC election broadcast.FRS is a football graphics result system for BBC Scotland. It’s main use is for the Sportscene Results TV programme broadcast on a Saturday afternoon, delivering result graphics from Opta sport data. The system generates automated highlight graphics for Sportscene Highlights across the weekend’s matches. Digital teams also render graphics for social posts. Other products include AlbaSus, ScotSus and WSRV - all driving automated visuals on BBC Alba, BBC Scotland and the BBC World Service respectively. These are output via CasparCG, either broadcast when programmes are off-air or supplementing radio audio in places such as Hong Kong.
