Considering the target population and its culture, the chance of such a course to achieve meaningful impact was very slight. I needed to innovate. With the help of some friends who are more "learned" in the field of film, together with my own research, I compiled the "Jewish Thought Through Film" course.B"H the course has been wonderfully successful. The number of students in the class usually doubles - sometimes triples - from the beginning of the year, as students tell their friends what they're missing. Boys regularly tell me that this was the only course that they "got something out of" during senior year, that this was the most meaningful class they took in their four years at MTA, and that it changed the way they process popular culture.By way of example, I use the film with which I like to open the school year, the classic 1941 film, "The Devil and Daniel Webster." (Students tell me that an additional benefit of taking this course is an appreciation for classic - even black and white! - films.) It is ideal for Elul because of its themes surrounding the yetzer ho'ra and teshuvah.Speaker:My wife and I have large and varied repertoires of topics and programs, and Baruch Hashem have been very well received in many venues, including shul and hotel scholar-in-residence events and programs.

An independent thinker he has brought insights and originality to his work in theology and talmudic scholarship. In both textual analysis he brings critical and keen interpretation as a translator as well as commentator. His erudition spans the vast historical panorama of rabbinics from exoteric to deep mystical and hassidic texts. A great communicator he has lead learning groups such as the "Daf Yomi" and has translated for Artscroll publications, with positions held at Hebrew Theological College in Chicago and now on the east coast. He is truly a man for all seasons blending the best in rabbinic scholarship with humanity and morality, never allowing for a split between the two. He is also a reconciler in his continuing attempt on his famous on line discussion groups to blend both the mystical and rational strands in Judaism that often appear in conflict. He has absolute mastery of difficult texts form the Palestinian Talmud ( he was the first ever in Chicago to complete it) to the Habad masters and the notion of Tzimtzum (some might call it incarnation!) . His leaving Chicago left a gaping whole in the community as well as personally but NY i guess is all the richer for his presence.
