Dissertation: "Spectrogram inversion and potential applications for hearing research" This project introduced a general framework for spectrogram inversion, i.e., recovering a time-domain signal from a multi-channel envelope representation. Three specific applications were investigated:1- A direct application to "traditional" spectrograms obtained from the short-time Fourier transform provides an accurate back end to signal processing methods performed in the spectrogram domain2- Application to auditory spectrograms (which model the output of the human cochlea) provides a valuable tool for psycho-acoustic researchers as it allows to generate test stimuli that will ellicit a given response at the output of the cochlea.3- Inversion of filtered spectrograms allows to perform modulation filtering. As temporal modulation plays a significant role in speech intelligibility, this potentially brings new processing techniques for enhancing the intelligibility of speech in noise.Overall, the method proved useful for in-depth study of the influence of temporal modulations on speech intelligibility and for further understanding of the properties of common auditory peripheral models.
