As Principal Legal Counsel, I support and participate in all aspects of IP transactions, licensing, and acquisition matters for Samsung Electronics global product and business groups. In this role, I provide strategic advice, negotiate and draft complex intellectual property (IP) agreements such as patent licenses and acquisition agreements, software licenses, joint development agreements, university licenses, patent pool agreements, open source and standard setting body agreements, as well as IP provisions in purchase, interoperability and performance, reseller and distribution agreements for Samsung’s networking business. For example, I negotiate and draft patent license agreements involving standard essential patents (SEPs), and manage all U.S. in-bound patent acquisitions matters from patent brokers and inventors across a vast array of cutting-edge technology. I also negotiate and draft complex IP provisions in purchase agreements involving Samsung’s 5G networking products with mobile network operating companies (MNOs) building green field and brown field mobile networking environments.Additionally, I counsel internal clients on Open Source compliance, provide litigation risk assessment analysis to internal groups on IP/licensing and litigation issues involving transactional matters, and represent Samsung before standard setting bodies, provide support relating to IP disputes with third parties, and manage outside counsel on complex transactional matters.

At Folio Law Group, I made complex technology such as 5G networks, software, and cybersecurity simple to understand in high stakes patent litigation. I was lead counsel on multiple Inter Partes Review (IPR) proceedings that led to successful final decisions saving patentability of patents relating to Radio Access Networks (RANs) including Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) and malware protection software. I argued at Markman claim construction hearings, handled expert reports and depositions, provided case strategy, and participated in all phases of patent litigation in Delaware, Texas, and California district courts. Prior to joining Folio Law Group, I spearheaded wining litigation and trial strategy on two patent jury cases in district court and five International Trade Commission (ITC) proceedings on technology ranging from touchpads, Ethernet and power controller chips, to sintered rare earth magnets leading to beneficial results for the client. I also managed two patent jury trials leading to multi-million damage awards and oversaw over ten district court cases involving cutting-edge cybersecurity patents Specifically, I was IP litigation partner at Alston+Bird LLP, and held in-house counsel positions as Senior Patent Prosecution Director at Rovi Guides, Inc. and Senior IP counsel at Finjan, Inc. I also worked as an IP litigation and patent attorney at Womble Bond Dickinson (US) LLP, Finnegan Henderson LLP, among others, and was a former Patent Examiner at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office involving computer network art. I enjoy fishing, tennis, golfing and am a licensed hockey and soccer referee in adult and youth sports.

As Senior Patent Prosecution Director, I contributed to the success of Tivo's intellectual property (IP) and licensing of its IP assets including thousands of world-wide patents and pending patent applications. In particular, I assist in growing Tivo's cutting edge world-wide digital entertainment patent portfolio and implementation of patent strategy and processes involving technology such as electronic program guides (EPGs)/interactive program guides (IPGs), search and recommendation, personalization, metadata, analytics, advertising, interactive television (iTV), video on demand (VOD), digital video recording (DVR) and streaming media over the Internet (OTT).

As an IP and Patent Attorney with Womble Bond Dickinson (US) LLP in their Silicon Valley office, I assisted high-tech companies protect, enforce, and license its as well as identify and obtain optimum value for patented inventions. I provided IP and patent counseling and services in all areas to achieve optimal legal and business results for high-tech clients, including Patent Prosecution, Worldwide Patent Portfolio Management, Patent Litigation and Support, Patent Licensing, IPRs and Reexamination Proceedings.

As Senior Director, IP Counsel for Finjan Holdings, Inc. (FHI), I oversaw 10 litigations (8 in U.S. district courts and 2 in German Patent courts) seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in damages. FHI is a Cybersecurity company developing and licensing malware protection technology and products. Two of those litigations resulted in patent jury damage awards of 39.5 and 15 million dollars, respectively, and one resulted in a settlement of 10.9 million dollars. During my time at FHI, I managed and expanded FHI’s worldwide patent portfolio of 50+ cutting edge Cybersecurity patent assets. Regarding that Cybersecurity patent portfolio, I assisted and participated in all phases of 3 licensing deals closing in over 7+ million dollars. Importantly, I helped FHI protect these valuable patent assets in which I managed and was counsel on 47 IPR proceedings filed against FHI having obtained a 75% success rate of IPR petition denials. I have also argued before the PTAB in which I managed and participated in reexamination hearings having obtained 3 reversals at the PTAB confirming FHI’s patents. Additionally, I studied and analyzed the mobile security market in introducing FHI’s first secured mobile browser and assisted in designing patentable features implemented in the browser.

I joined the IP litigation group of Alston & Bird LLP in 2004 and became an IP Litigation Partner in 2009. This group was formerly part of the Silicon Valley office of Akin Gump (2005-2008), which absorbed the group from the Silicon Valley office of Shaw Pittman (2004-2005). During my time here, I gained substantial trial and litigation experience. Specifically, I managed and supervised the day-to-day operations for 2 patent jury trials and 8 ITC investigation hearings, including taking direct and cross-examination of fact and expert witnesses. I managed 20+ timekeepers in handling day-to-day tasks involving over 3 terabytes of data for state and district court litigation as well as ITC litigation with multi-million dollar budgets. I have had a number of litigation successes. For instance, in a rare 337 ITC proceeding involving both trade secret and patent litigation, I implemented a winning ITC trial strategy proving that over 2000 design files were stolen and copied by former employees and 100+ power controller chips were in violation of trade secret misappropriation and patent infringement. I also architected a winning patent jury trial strategy and presentation in obtaining a non-infringement verdict involving optical mice patents, and developed winning strategy in CD-ROM players ITC trial finding invalidity prior art. I was also lead counsel on IPR proceedings including preparation of a winning petition and analysis showing rare earth magnet patents invalid.

I was an IP Litigation Associate at Finnegan and focused on patent litigation and prosecution, managing worldwide patent portfolios for emerging technology companies, and providing patent opinions and analysis. For instance, I managed worldwide patent portfolio for involving cutting edge Pentile pixel display technology, prepared the first microprocessor patent applications for IC maker using reorder buffer technology. I advised LCD display makers on developing new LCD technology and provided freedom to operate in view of the current IP landscape. I also defended power controller designers in district court patent litigation.

Early in my carreer, I started as a Patent Associate at BSTZ learning one of the most important skills in my career – understanding an invention from different perspectives. I learned innovative and core technology for start-up and Fortune 500 companies in Silicon Valley and prepared and prosecuted their inventions into patents at the PTO. I worked on a broad array of technologies including microprocessors, network routers, media content presentation and distribution, micro-electrical-mechanical systems (MEMS), and all optical networks and switches.

As a Patent Examiner at the PTO, I learned and understood the basics of innovation by examining thousands of inventions in the computer networking and software arts. I examined thousands of applications and technologies that were developed at the advent of the Internet and the popularity of the world-wide-web. I also classified the memory buffering patents.
