About Simon Potter

Project management isn’t rocket science if you approach in the right way, the problem is people often don’t! I’ve been around projects for a long time and hence I have seen a lot of people, processes and technology projects that have gone well, or the alternative.I think the key to success is often simple, understand the drivers of the people and the project, listen, learn, understand and then combine those views into a cohesive vision and that prevents dilution and disaggregation as this often leads to failure.Sometimes you need to get involved, share the drive and passion but other times you need to stand back and be more pragmatic and the “trick” is to know when to do each – even more applicable when you are working across various organisations and levels.Being honest with people, really honest, often helps to facilitate a change in perceptions, bringing down barriers to progress and moving programmes and projects forward.Every project manager out there will say they deliver to time and budget, often at a cost to motivation of the people and for me it is more about delivering as painlessly as possible, the change that is needed to impact the outcomes of the business.
