MAPSCorps is a 501c3 non-profit organization based on the south side of Chicago. Born from the South Side Health and Vitality Studies at the University of Chicago, MAPSCorps uses asset-based community-engaged research to ensure that our science serves community priorities and needs. MAPSCorps employs and delivers STEM and health-focused programming to local high school youth who map existing resources in an assigned community. Working in teams over the summer, MAPSCorps participants navigate our communities while observing, collecting and analyzing data about all public-facing businesses and organizations. Utilizing our collected data, high school students work as field researchers. At the same time, certified teachers serve as Field Supervisors to prepare an extensive research project focusing on the social determinants of health. Youth-led research findings and public health policy proposals are presented to community stakeholders, urban planners, elected officials and researchers.
