As a theoretical physicist, I was leading the Theoretical Physics Division, consisting of more than 25 physicists, at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, for about 10 years (April 2002 to October 2011). I was providing guidance in advanced research in theoretical work related to modelling, design and analysis of experiments for various applications of nuclear energy. In addition to fundamental and basic physics, our research work also included topics closely related to thermonuclear fusion and fission physics. Our studies in inertial confinement and laser driven fusion schemes enabled me to work in a number of current areas of investigations like atomic physics of dense and hot plasma, high pressure equation of state of materials, high temperature opacity of materials, hydrodynamics and shock wave phenomena, radiation transport theory, fission and fusion physics, etc.Based on a course of lectures I gave at Theoretical Physics Division, I wrote a monograph titled "Renormalization Group Theory of Critical Phenomena" which was published by New Age International Publishers. I authored /co-authored around 70 theoretical papers in reputed international journals. I also wrote similar number of documents on topics related to my work at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.Apart from official responsibilities, I had interest in a wide range of topics in theoretical physics and applied mathematics. I received PhD degree (in Applied Mathematics, Science Stream) for my thesis, titled "Applications of Fourier Transform Methods to Resonance Absorption Phenomena in Nuclear Reactors", from Bombay University in 1978. I retired from service on 31 October 2011, in the post of Distinguished Scientist. Having spend all my time on research problems in physics, some of them with important applications in my professional carrier, i hope to continue the research activity. Fortunately i had learned some computing skills so that i can test quantitatively some of my theoretical ideas.

My other research problems are in radiation transport theory, high pressure and temperature properties of materials, renormalization group theory, etc. Last year onward (2018), I have begun a detailed study of General Relativity, Gravitation and Cosmology. This topic is now becoming my latest field of concentrated study.I am keenly interested in the historical development of scientific thought. A topic of my current reading "Science of Limits and Limits of Science". I also spend a lot of time on computational physics, specifically related to statistical physics problems.

Research ScientistBarc Aug 1972 - Oct 2011I am a researcher in theoretical physics for more than 40 years. My post graduation in physics was, in 1971, from University of Kerala, and i was first ranker from entire state in that year. Thereafter I attended a one year training programme in Nuclear Science at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai. In a batch of more than 35 trainees, selected from all over India, I held second rank at the time of graduation. I joined the Theoretical Physics Division of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in August 1972, as Scientific Officer, which is a post of gazette officer in Government of India service. Throughout my career, I have been involved in research programmes of theoretical, mathematical and computational nature which were necessary for different types of applications - civilian as well as strategic - of nuclear energy.Initially for about twelve years I worked on applications of fission reactor physics for design and operational aspects of nuclear power reactors. This involved acquiring the necessary knowledge of the mathematical theory and models, adapting them to suit our specific requirements, implementation for computations and applications to power reactors. Thereafter for more than sixteen years, I was mainly involved with similar responsibilities, but now for strategic applications. During all these years I also was keenly working on other topics, mainly in applications statistical and mathematical methods, and I also had a great opportunity to work with some of my esteemed colleagues in chemistry and solid state groups on soft matter physics.
