The SA Precision Dosing Group is led by Dr Madelé van Dyk, a clinical pharmacologist research fellow, Full-Time Cancer Fighter, Mr Ryan Hodges, and Dr Ganessan Kichenadasse, State Lead of the Cancer Network of South Australia and medical oncologist. Our goal is to provide a personalised dosing approach for every cancer patient.Targeted therapies are miracle drugs, targeting only cancer cells and thereby leaving healthy cells alone. However, these therapies are currently prescribed in a ‘one-size-fits all’ manner. This is problematic as each patient metabolises and absorbs the drug differently, and evidence has shown that blood concentrations can differ up to 20-100% between patients. Body type, age, genetics, gender, ethnicity, and drug metabolism are all factors which affect how much of the drug ends up in the body. These factors are not currently considered when dosing with selected targeted therapies. Getting the ‘right amount of drug’ to the patient is crucial, and our aim is to get rid of the ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach and create a personalised approach for every patient to make sure they get the dose their body needs, to give them the best chance of benefiting from the treatment. That means the best quality of life and the best chance of survival, while minimising the toxicity they’re exposed to.
