About Saba Aslam

I study issues of urban poverty and inequality in global South cities. My research interests focus on informality, access to basic services such as housing, water and energy. I am currently leading two research studies with different academic institutions in Pakistan. With Habib University (Karachi), I am studying how various modes of water provision operate in low-income settlements of Karachi. At a local thinktank, IDEAS (Lahore) I am studying how informal women worker unions collectivise and strategise against backlash. I am a mixed-methods researcher with training in NVIVO, SPSS, STATA as well as Kobo ToolBox.

Course designed and taught: Water infrastructures and development in southern citiesThis course investigates major debates around water infrastructures in the context of urban ‘development’. With a particular focus on global South cities, where access to water for a majority of the poor is neither universal nor a straightforward process, we reflect on various theoretical conceptualisations that explain unequal access. We place contextual information beyond notions of water scarcity and instead focus on power struggles, informality, and colonial legacies. Towards the end, we reflect on current debates on privatisation, and the role of donor institutions in the water sector of global South cities.
