I worked as a Domestic Operative at Southmead Hospital, during the peaks of the Covid pandemic. This basically means that I cleaned wards in the hospital. Putting my health at risk for the sole reason of providing an infection-free environment for our patients and doctors.Some may ask why I took a cleaning job when I have the ability to do something "better". My response to them would be that I have gained a new perspective on cleaners and their impact on our livelihood. They are the unseen heroes of the pandemic and without us, the impact of Covid-19 could have been worse.What I learnt from this experience:+ Infection control - how diseases like MRSA, Covid etc are spread within hospitals and how effective cleaning can reduce its spread to the community. + Use of machinery i.e. Ultraviolet light technology, to decontaminate areas with the possible risk of aerosol transmission of SARS-CoV-2. + Working effectively in teams for rapid response and recovery of wards, which have had suspected Covid risks. Along with these skills, working as a domestic operative has given me the chance to see how the NHS works from a different standpoint. From this, I hope to use my new knowledge to better myself as a medical student and future doctor.
