At a young age, I fell in love with science because I realized that everything around me involved science, and I became fascinated with understanding the 'science' behind everything. After completing my scientific studies at Concordia I began working in the lab, but quickly realized that my true calling was to share my passion for science with others, especially youths and those who “don’t like science”, I ended up becoming a science teacher, and this has been my most rewarding job. I am currently a Science & Technology teacher at Loyola High School and their Family Outreach Coordinator and in this capacity I work towards increasing equity, diversity and inclusion. I hold a Bachelor of Science from Concordia University (double-majored in Biochemistry and Theology with a minor in Multidisciplinary Studies in Science: Scientific Research) and recently completed my Master of Arts in Teaching and Learning Science & Technology at McGill University. In Winter 2022 I returned to Concordia University to complete my Master of Arts in Theology. My hopes are to return to McGill in the near future to start a PhD in order to continue the EDI work that I started in my MA.I consider myself to be “an advocate for equity, diversity & inclusion (EDI)” and enjoy doing EDI work: for example, in 2020 I was invited to be a part of the Lester B. Pearson School Board’s Task Force on Equity, Diversity & Inclusion and I was the principal writer for the “Genders” chapter in their final report (which was released in June 2021). I was an external consultant and a mentor for McGill’s “Pick Your Path for Black Youth” mentoring program. Additionally, in January 2022, I had the privilege of presenting my research (conducted at McGIll) on the underrepresentation of Blacks in STEM at the Canadian Black Scientists inaugural Black Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine/Health Conference (BE-STEMM 2022): the title of my research paper is “Working Towards Increasing the Representation of Blacks in STEM, One Equitable Classroom at a Time.” I also had the honour of presenting my research at Stockholm University (in March 2022) and at a McGill University Graduate Studies conference where I won an award for my oral presentation. With this being said, my goal is to always work for organizations that prioritize Equity, Diversity & Inclusion.
