About Sabine Winters

As a freelance philosopher of science, I specialize in the philosophy of space. I'm a doctoral research student at the University Of Utrecht, Freudenthal Institute, History & Philosophy of Science. Under the guidance of dr. Guido Bacciagaluppi (Utrecht University), dr. Mike Stuart (York University, UK) and dr. Jai Grover (ESA ESTEC, ACT) my research focuses on the epistemic value of imagination in space science and exploration. My goal is to further specialize in the philosophy of the role of imagination in space science, with the aim of bringing more philosophy to the space industry. My ongoing research project, Scientific Imagination, focuses on the role of imagination in the natural sciences. Furthermore, I am the founder and director of Future Based Foundation, an interdisciplinary philosophy platform that hosts meetups and publishes podcasts and articles. I strongly believe in the value of interdisciplinary research, as it allows for a synthesis of ideas that integrates characteristics from different disciplines. However, I am also interested in analyzing the pitfalls of interdisciplinary projects and finding ways to bridge the different disciplines successfully. I offer workshops, lectures, and programs on the topic of imagination in science, such as film and philosophy lectures or utopian thinking workshops. Through my writings, podcasts, discussions, lectures, and programming, I aim to facilitate new networks and foster more crossovers between different disciplines, providing new insights about our changing world. My passion for understanding the way we think has led me to work on a wide variety of assignments over the past eight years, including writing and giving film and philosophy lectures, conducting workshops on utopian thinking, and presenting on the impact of technology on our lives. Often, I collaborate with scientists, philosophers, artists, designers, and entrepreneurs, researching with them, organizing projects, and curating interdisciplinary programs.

I'm a doctoral researcher at the University Of Utrecht, Freudenthal Institute, History & Philosophy of Science. Under the guidance of dr. Guido Bacciagaluppi (Utrecht University), dr. Mike Stuart (York University, UK) and dr. Jai Grover (ESA ESTEC, Advanced Concepts Team) my research focuses on the epistemic value of imagination in space science and exploration. In my PhD thesis, I propose to look at a particular part of space science practice: their use of imagination. Mission planners use imagination to envision potential scenarios and develop contingency plans in case of unexpected events. How do you decide where to land on Mars with limited data about the environment? They use imagination on-the-fly to deal with events that were not in the contingency plans. What would it be like for an astronaut living on Mars in habitats that haven’t been designed yet? Could we grow an exoskeleton on people to assist those who are living in space for extended periods of time? Maybe these questions seem far-fetched, but they are part of everyday practice for teams that are working on advanced concepts in the (public and private) space industry sector. The first question is: how do space scientists themselves conceive of the role of imagination is their work? Second, what is the value of imagination in future space missions (if any), and how can we account for that value, and perhaps even improve it?Overall, this project seeks to shed light on the epistemology of scientific imagination, as well as motivate greater attention to the philosophy of space science. Finally, and more broadly, I want to argue for the importance of imagination in space science when it comes to the ethical-political-social (disruptive) implications of the ‘how and why’ of space missions.

    Freelance Philosopher
    Scientific Imagination 2016 - Present
I work as a freelance philosopher, and as a professional in the world of philosophy I am practically oriented and interested in the process of idea development and the ‘how and why’ behind a theory or process. Over the last eight years, I have organized, directed, and programmed many (over 60) interdisciplinary workshops, meetings, and lectures – in assignment as well as for my platform, Future Based. In my role as a cultural programmer I’m specializing in art and technology at Theater de Lindenberg in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. I also serve as a tutor, study coach, and philosophy teacher at the departments Product Design and Design Art Technology at ArtEZ University of the Arts. Among other, I teach on how to integrate philosophy in design thinking, and how to critically reflect on your design process through philosophy. I have extensive experience in film and philosophy lectures, utopian and dystopian thinking, philosophy of science (astronomy), interdisciplinary research, and philosophy. From January till July 2023, I’ve been conducting research on the role of imagination in space science at the Advanced Concepts Team of the European Agency. Following up on this research I’ve been accepted as doctoral candidate at the Freudenthal Institute Philosophy and History of Science, Utrecht University. Under the guidance of dr. Guido Bacciagaluppi (Utrecht University), dr. Jai Grover (ESA ESTEC) and dr. Mike Stuart (York University), I will be researching the epistemic role of imagination in space science.I believe that interdisciplinary research allows for a synthesis of ideas that integrates characteristics from different disciplines. The crossing of borders between disciplines can be highly potent spaces, but the challenge lies in how to bridge the different disciplines in such ways that they can trade and integrate information successfully.

Questioning established frameworks.Perhaps it’s something of all times…. to think we are on a turning point, but it seems that there are so many writings on the wall we can’t ignore that indeed we are, due to technology, living on the border of a paradigm shift. In our belief our world perspective will change dramatically in the coming twenty years. It’s just that we sometimes can’t see clearly what is right under our collective nose: our world isn’t only changing, it is changing faster than ever.Nevertheless, there is a tendency to forget the importance of reflecting on how the world is changing, and in particular what the consequences of these changes might be. In this perspective, we engage philosophy as a form of activism and use it to question the status quo and the established frameworks we tend to believe in so dearly.Asking questions can provide access into gaining insight. And as paradoxical as it might sound, by allowing for speculative futures and imagining alternatives, we make space for fresh notions of both ourselves and the world: Familiarizing ourselves with the future grants access to a better understanding of the Now. But in many areas, too few questions are asked, or a subject is merely discussed unilaterally. Future Based organizes discussions with experts in their field to ask critical questions. Not to necessarily find straight answers, but to formulate more specific questions, and to foster a deeper understanding of the world we live in. After all, the world is constantly changing.
