I never thought the biggest challenge I’d face would be a catalyst for change. A brain tumor and subsequent treatment quickly changed the trajectory of my life and career. It also taught me a great deal about being humble, patient, and strategic. Without that life experience, I never would have found the passion I have for human resources and labor relations. I accepted a position in Human Resources, not entirely grasping the entirety of the door that I was opening. After 9.5 months, I took over as Human Resources Manager and over the past 17 months, have onboarded 66 people. With a current office headcount of 120, that is half of our workforce. Some of my other initiatives during this time were creating a 17-page supervisor’s onboarding guide (and abbreviated brochure), restructuring our timekeeping logistics to secure compliance, and starting a quarterly HR newsletter. In previous positions, some of my most important tasks weren’t the duties listed on my job description. Anticipating challenges and mitigating them before they occur, having collaborative discussions with all staff levels including top executives, and finding barriers to good ideas and then implementing solutions are some of my most contributing accomplishments.
