Project title: Eating Behaviors of Autistic Women with an Eating DisorderSupervisors: Prof. dr. Annemarie van Elburg, Dr. Unna Danner, Dr. Annelies SpekDuring my PhD trajectory, I am investigating the eating behaviors of autistic women with a co-morbid eating disorder:A large body of literature has focused on the role and clinical implications of autism spectrum traits that have been repeatedly found in eating disorder samples. On the one hand, elevated autism spectrum traits have been associated with a more severe presentation of the eating disorder and subsequently with poorer treatment outcome. On the other hand, recent results indicate that autistic women experience significantly more eating problems than controls, such as having eating rituals and sensory sensitivities, while also reporting more disordered eating behaviours. Research into the eating behaviours of women with both diagnosed autism spectrum disorder and an eating disorder however is scarce. This study aims to gain insight into the eating behaviours of autistic women with an eating disorder by comparing their behaviours to women with an eating disorder that are not autistic and to autistic women that do not have an eating disorder. In addition to that, we are investigating whether their attitudes and behaviors towards food are associated with other (co-morbid) problems and quality of life.
