Principle Crop Scientist
Leading the Arable Crop Pest research group, having grown the group in terms of revenue and personnel since taking on the role in 2020. At that time the group consisted of three crop scientists and now has eight crop scientists. Revenue has increased four-fold and is on track to continue. The group delivers high quality research and consultancy to clients, including Defra, AHDB, BBRO, EU Horizon, the agrochemical industry, plant breeders, Innovate, the Soil Association, biocontrol companies and non-chemical plant protection companies. Research projects include national and international, multi-year collaborations, field trials, semi-field trials, protected (polytunnel and greenhouse) trials and lab-based controlled environment experiments. Research topics include trials to test efficacy of chemical and non-chemical plant protection products (PPP) to registration standard (using natural infestation or artificial inoculation), pest surveys, development of integrated pest management (IPM) programmes (e.g. threshold development, cultural control, non-chemical control, chemical control, crop tolerance), modelling and the development of decision support systems (DSS) for pests, insecticide resistance management and monitoring, reviews, pest biology and farmer led trials. The work offered by the group has diversified under my management, including with baseline sensitivity, resistance testing and pollinator studies. Secured significant internal investment for the development of a bespoke Pest Biology Lab at our High Mowthorpe site.Other than coordinating the group, my role includes preparing proposals, developing consortia, designing, managing, delivering and reporting research, data analysis, quality control and client management. Knowledge exchange includes project reports, scientific papers, conference and grower podium presentations, press articles. The group have collaborated with a wide range of research and academic institutions in the UK and abroad.
Senior Crop Consultant
Leading the Arable Crop Pest research group since 2020, ensuring high quality research is delivered to clients. Designing, managing, delivering and reporting research. Research areas include IPM (e.g. threshold development, avoidance, tolerance, non-chemical control, chemical control), insecticide resistance management, pest modelling and decision support systems.
