Head Of Trade For Development Team In Geneva
Senior Trade For Development Policy Advisor
I was the UK Department for International Development (DFID)'s representative on trade in Geneva, leading the UK's work on trade and development at the WTO and other UN organisations. My role was to advise the UK Government on the development side of international trade negotiations, while overseeing a portfolio of UK aid-for-trade investments in several Geneva-based international organisations.
Senior Economist / Associate
I was an Associate and Senior Economist at WTI Advisors, a highly specialised Geneva-based provider of technical assistance and advice on international trade issues. I built our client portfolio among aid donors and developing country governments, advising both sets of clients through more than 30 technical assistance projects on trade policy, negotiating and training.I successfully won and executed a range of high-level projects, including serving as the Lead Author of the first in-depth review of the EU-Caribbean trade and development FTA, managing the 14-country Caribbean Community’s negotiating position on goods trade with Canada, and guiding Tonga through their first WTO Trade Policy Review.I was also asked by our clients to provide advice on trade and development, including to the European Commissioner for Trade on EU-Africa trade relationships, and to the Commonwealth on reshaping its work on international trade.
Regional Integration And Market Access Advisor / Consultant
I was an advisor and consultant to the Commonwealth on international trade and development, working on issues affecting the Commonwealth’s 30 small developing country members. I was asked to be part of the Caribbean team that successfully negotiated an innovative 46-country trade and development FTA with the European Union. I was responsible for one of the most politically and technical complex areas of the negotiation – managing the 15-country Caribbean position on goods liberalisation – and engaging governments, business and civil society.I also managed the writing and roll-out of a major Commonwealth / Asian Development Bank study that advised Australian, New Zealand and Pacific Islands heads of government on developing a closer regional integration project.I also led the design and delivery of several studies for Commonwealth governments on aid-for-trade, economic adjustment, international rule-making, and negotiations at the regional, bilateral and multilateral level.
Associate Economic Researcher
I was recruited, while at the Commonwealth, for a short-term placement at the United Nations. My team advised developing countries in severe external debt problems, in the context of the "Paris Club" process. During my stay at the UN, I advised a number of debtor countries, including Iraq, Kenya and Guyana.
Researcher
I worked within a team conducting assessments of national financial systems against international standards, ranging from banking supervision to securities regulation and corporate governance.
