As a senior research editor at Science I have the unique opportunity and privilege to identify the best science in the fields of ecology, evolutionary biology, organismal biology, behavior, conservation biology, fisheries, biomechanics and vertebrate paleontology, among others. As a handler of research submissions I lead the decision process for papers in my areas of expertise, from initial assessment, to review, to final acceptance (or rejection). Further, I am responsible for proposing improvements to submissions, from suggestions regarding scientific content to overall presentation. In order to further develop and maintain the expertise necessary for this important responsibility, I engage actively with the scientific community through regular attendance at international research conferences and visits to researchers and laboratories globally. As an editor, I am also involved in tapping the most exciting areas of research through identification of timely topics for coverage as Reviews, Special Issues, and Editor's Choice pieces. My position also allows me to maintain and develop my public speaking and outreach skills and, additionally, requires a substantial amount of respectful and gracious interaction with authors and creative problem solving for everything from author relations to the challenge of scientific publishing in the modern era.

In this volunteer advisory position I had the honor to be able to help identify exciting and transformative conservation science for the World Wildlife Fund's new Luc Hoffman Institute. The laudable goal of the institute to is to connect ground-breaking science to global conservation needs in an effort to increase the pace of environmental problem solving in our rapidly changing world.

While a post-doctoral researcher in the Hoekstra Lab at Harvard I operated an independent research project through all stages from conception, writing of grant and research proposals, acquisition of funding, intensive field (including population and habitat assessment of an endangered species) and laboratory (including both standard and non-standard genetic methods) data collection, data analysis and synthesis, writing and production of published research papers in high quality journals, and regular dissemination of results through professional talks at research meetings. In addition to the role I played as an active research scientist, I also assisted with education and mentoring of other students and post-doctoral researchers in the laboratory.

I was awarded a University President's Post-doctoral fellowship for the research I proposed to conduct in the Hoekstra Laboratory when it was still located at UC San Diego. My tasks, therefore, were identical to those described for my time at Harvard. However, being awarded this fellowship for women and minorities was an honor and I was pleased to be able to use my short time on this fellowship to develop my skills in mentoring and interpersonal relations, which have continued to grow and are quite valuable in the work I now do as a research editor of a diverse and internationally important scientific journal.

While a Leverhulme Fellow at the University of Sussex I acquired skills in theoretical evolutionary biology and furthered my teaching experience. Perhaps more valuable, however, than the achievements that can be listed on paper, were the international connections that I made while working in the UK and the opportunity to broaden my familiarity with international academic cultures.
