About Sadab Mahmud
I am currently an R&D associate engineer at ABB in the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) team under smart power, electrification division. With the growth of AI applications, high-performance data-centers are expanding, and maintaining high-quality continuous power on the server racks is paramount. I'm excited to contribute to the development and design of ABB UPS systems to further the AI revolution and provide high-quality, uninterruptible power in data-centers and beyond.I have completed my PhD in Electrical Engineering at the University of Toledo, where I was involved in several projects with the power and energy research group. My projects spanned a range of applications, including the applications of wideband gap semiconductors for next-generation power electronics, design and implementation of advanced algorithms for controlling and optimizing distributed energy resources (DERs), and optimizing and managing hybrid or integrated energy systems (IES). I have also interned at Idaho National Laboratory, where I supported the modeling and simulation of an IES with nuclear sources and electrolyzers. I am passionate about the potential for these research areas to positively impact society and the environment. If you're interested in getting in touch or sharing a joke with me, feel free to email me at sadabmm@gmail.com or drop a message here on LinkedIn. I look forward to connecting with you!
Listed skills include Programming, Matlab, Microcontrollers, Arduino, and 15 others.

Research Assistant
• Controlled and optimized distributed energy resources (DERs): - Led the design and implementation of advanced photovoltaic (PV) output power optimization algorithms for DC-DC converter controls, achieving a tracking accuracy of 99%.- Validated their efficacy through comprehensive circuit simulations and practical experimentation with low-cost embedded controls.- Programmed solar array simulators (SAS) and utilized AC/DC load emulators with DC-DC converters to empirically validate maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control algorithms. - Facilitated the development of a microgrid network to evaluate energy optimization control algorithms within UToledo campus buildings and DERs, enabling power and cost savings.• Developed energy systems with market-based demand control: - Applied transactive energy to enhance the performance of a nuclear-renewable integrated energy system (IES), focusing on sustainable hydrogen production.- Developed power conversion systems and hydrogen subsystem models for simulation.- Implemented a Python-based framework incorporating machine learning techniques to optimize energy dispatching decisions within the IES, augmenting flexibility and revenue generation.• Modeled and characterized advanced power electronic components, controls, and circuitry:- Modeled wide-bandgap (WBG) semiconductor devices for next-generation power electronic simulations.- Directed the design and evaluation of circuit boards tailored for experiments involving WBG devices. - Executed experiments for both static and dynamic characterization of silicon (Si), silicon carbide (SiC), and GaN devices, providing conclusive evidence of the superior switching performance of WBG devices.
Content Tutor
Content tutors are a core group of undergraduate and graduate students assigned to meet one-on-one with student-athletes to guide them in specific subjects and courses. • Taught 1100 level math (calculus) as a tutor at Student-Athlete Academic Services (SAAS).
Energy Systems Modeling Intern
• Developed a comprehensive model for a nuclear reactor with integrated electrolyzers harnessing nuclear power to generate hydrogen for a sustainable future.• Analyzed the impact of power converters on electrolyzer efficiency for hydrogen production.• Conducted hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) tests, integrating grid-based simulations with the nuclear-hydrogen energy system model to ensure grid stability and reliability.
Operations Analyst
• Analyzed and evaluated present and proposed procedures or problems to define data processing needs.• Improved existing processes for organizational structure development.• Researched, proposed, and created standardized practices for all areas of operations.
Engineer Intern
• Analyzed the functionality of GSM architecture and the Robi network infrastructure.• Performed roaming service tests with various international carriers to ensure good quality service.• Managed and updated the SIM databases and bilateral launch lists and oversaw IR testing documents.
Instructor
• Taught O’ level Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (GCE, IGCSE, and CIE).
