More than a decade as a marine accident investigator has given me extensive experience in marine investigations of all kinds. Besides technical expertise of marine accident investigation, I bring a deep understanding of the human element as well as organizational factors that contribute to accidents. Before my work as an accident investigator, I enjoyed a 20-year career with the Canadian Coast Guard. As a senior officer and Master with the Coast Guard, I acquired substantial experience in ship manoeuvring and navigation in pilotage, restricted and ice infested waters. My shipboard experience was complemented by several years as Marine Superintendent with the Canadian Coast Guard and with Transport Canada as Inspector and Examiner of Masters & Mates.In 2012, I returned to sea as Master on various ships including cable ships and ASD trailing suction dredgers.Fellow of The Nautical Institute, a founding member of The Nautical Institute's IMO Steering Committee and, since 2013, Editor of The Nautical Institute's MARS reporting scheme. As Academic Course Director for the Diploma course in Marine Accident Investigation offered by Lloyd's Maritime Academy & Kent North College, I continue to pass on my experience and passion for accident investigation to others.
