Growing up on a ranch in eastern Idaho I learned to love animals and the agricultural industry. We always had cows and horses, but dad was known to pick up some other animals. Through the years our family has raised sheep, goats, chickens, turkeys, one miniature horse, and now bees. In high school, I was active in the FFA, further deepening my passion for animal agriculture. When I made it to the University of Idaho, it was not a hard decision to major in Animal Sciences and Agricultural Business. At the U of I, Dr. Troy Ott gave me my start as an Undergraduate Researcher in his reproductive physiology lab, and I found I also love working in laboratories. Just before my graduation Dr. Ott took a job at Pennsylvania State University and I followed along to pursue a Masters in Animal Science. My research there focused on early recognition of pregnancy in ruminants, specifically the regulation of 3 MX1 isoforms during early pregnancy. Following graduation from Penn State I was able to land a job with the JR Simplot Company as an embryologist. There I was able to combine my passion for animals with my love for lab work. In 2014 my husband and I started Sage Laboratories we offer testing to determine pregnancy status and detect diseases in cattle, goats, sheep and more. Clients from across the US mail us blood samples from their animal and within 9 days they are emailed the results. My husband and I recently started a new fertilizer subscription business, Sward Yard. Subscribers will be mailed golf course quality fertilizer at the right time and in the right amount for their yard size. Allowing them to own their yard with no confusing trips to the lawn store.
