Dream Job
I qualified visitors to the Eagle County area (Vail and Beaver Creek) with safe and sure rental equipment for their best mountain experience ever. I rented and set up ski, snowboard, and snowshoe equipment. I also sold convenience-store merchandise and mountain basics like wool socks and base layers.
6635 Co Rd 730, Gunnison, Co 81230
I took out and replaced 0.6-mile of barbed wire fence along a cow pasture within the ranch property. I also kept the stables clean and maintained a couple primitive cabins adjacent to the West Elk Wilderness. Work involved being around livestock, running a chainsaw, driving a truck and ATVs, and operating various other power tools.
Gothic, Colorado
I helped professors, graduate students, and undergraduate students with their research projects on high altitude plants in the Gothic, Colorado area. The particular species we focused our efforts on were aspen sunflower and valerian. I also designed, built, and deployed prototype warming chambers for individual plants in the field.
Gothic, Co
As the RMBL winter caretaker I lived alone in an improved cabin within the ski in-ski out research township of Gothic, Colorado. I managed the Forest Queen rental hut and collected weather data at an EPA weather station. I hauled water to the hut and kept it tidy for guests. My tasks at the EPA station were to collect snow samples, collect air quality samples, and mail out computer-logged precipitation data from the previous week. In the fall and spring shoulder seasons I worked for hourly wages with high-altitude field biologists and the campus operations and maintenance crew.
Avon, Co
In a versatile and interpretive position I worked for WMSC and the White River National Forest in partnership with Vail Resorts and Sylvan Lake State Park. Day to day duties changed, but included: program planning, managing the front desk of several Eagle County nature centers, leading short interpretive hikes at our center in Avon and at Eagle’s Nest on Vail Mountain, leading a summer-long natural sciences kids camp for 4-11 year-olds one day a week, and presenting interpretive programs at Yeoman Park campground, Sylvan Lake campground, and Gore Creek campground.
2610 Gilstrap Ct, Glenwood Springs, Co 81601
I took area visitors on guided river trips upon the Colorado River through Glenwood Canyon and "South Canyon." I was promoted to a trip leader position in 2013. Work required back and arm strength, foresight and quick thinking, the ability to listen and be listened to, and logistical savvy. My knowledge of natural sciences and the Glenwood Canyon, specifically, were a pleasure to share as I guided. Until late July I worked on the river at least 5 times a week.
600 N. Adams St. Gunnison, Colorado 81231
I assisted students during time in-lab, transported students in a 15-passenger van for field trips, and hosted 2-hour weekly study sessions as well. Class structure included lectures, handouts, and field applications. I was an assistant for the “Introduction to Geology” (GEOL 105) lab for 2 semesters and the “Historical Geology” (GEOL 210) lab for a single semester. I helped explain basic principles of geology, the geologic time scale, how to interpret maps, and how to differentiate minerals and rock types. I graded many, many quizzes.
