About Sahar El Abbadi

Research: I am an environmental engineer interested in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from food and water systems, through a combination of modeling and experimental approaches. My current work involves modeling emissions from water and wastewater treatment systems and strategies for abatement. Prior to joining LBL, I was at Stanford University where I completed my PhD and post-doctoral research. My work there included techno-economic modeling to evaluate how methane-consuming bacteria could serve as an aquaculture feed, offsetting demand for over-harvested fishmeal. As a postdoc at Stanford, I conducted field research to evaluate the performance of methane sensing airplanes, satellites, and ground-sensors through single-blind controlled release testing.Teaching: I enjoy teaching classes that challenge students to think critically about engineering problems and develop communication skills. I was the primary instructor for Pathogens & Disinfection (Stanford University, CEE 274D - Spring 2020), a graduate level class that aims to provide engineering students with in-depth knowledge of pathogen lifecycles and strategies for pathogen removal or inactivation in water and air. As a teaching fellow, I co-taught Our Genome (Stanford University, THINK 68 - Fall 2021), an undergraduate course for freshmen aimed at developing critical thinking and writing skills through the lens of the history genetics, from Mendel and Darwin to CRISPR. I also taught public speaking courses and workshops for engineers for 5 years through Stanford's Technical Communication Program, and have served as teaching assistant for undergraduate and graduate engineering courses.
