Supporting Humanitarian Diplomacy students in their research on the application of humanitarian diplomacy principles to various contexts.

Research, policy analysis and advocacy on national and international issues affecting refugees and people seeking asylum.I continue to represent Refugee Council of Australia in national and international platforms, engaging in dialogue and advocacy with policy- and decision-makers.

Refugee Council of Australia is the national umbrella body for 200 organisations working with refugees and asylum seekers. It promotes the adoption of flexible, humane and practical policies towards refugees and asylum seekers both within Australia and internationally through conducting research, advocacy, policy analysis and community education. Duties and responsibilities of the Policy Officer include:  Conducting research and policy analysis on issues affecting asylum seekers and refugees; Preparing submissions, briefing papers and other material for public dissemination on appropriate refugee related matters; Representing Refugee Council of Australia in interagency committees, community consultations and conferences;  Supervising interns and volunteers involved in research and policy analysis.

Assisting in a research on Optional Protocol to Convention against Torture

 Undertaking regular monitoring visits to detention facilities in Australia, assessing conditions of those facilities against humanitarian standards, analysing developments in key priority areas;  Documenting and reporting on Australian Red Cross observations regarding conditions of detention facilities and issues of humanitarian concern; Undertaking confidential humanitarian diplomacy with authorities and ensuring that advocacy is evidence-based; Attending high level interagency meetings as a representative of the program and delivering multiple presentations explaining the work of Immigration Detention Monitoring Program to various external stakeholders; Conducting volunteer recruitment, orientation and training, coordinating volunteer teams on detention visits, providing on-site supervision and leadership to volunteers during detention visits and post-visit debriefs.

Managed a team of up to 9 caseworkers in a fast-paced and changing program focusing on provision of intensive case management to people affected by migration, including asylum seekers released from Australian immigration detention centres.

Provided casework support to asylum seekers and people who were made vulnerable through the immigration process, worked in a fast-paced and cross-cultural environment.

Conducted a comprehensive research on the United Nations Security Council and its veto power. The result was a 70-page report published as a joint working paper of MIAT and Sydney University Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies.

Worked in a team of researchers to develop bio-mimetic adhesives.
