About Saima Akhtar

I am the CLF's Inclusion & Diversity Coordinator. Since 2003 I’ve had many roles in education including working as an English teacher, an ALP manager and being pastoral support – so I feel like I have never left education and have definitely enjoyed term time work! My first job in education was an E2E Tutor, while doing my Cert. Ed - and this is really where my EDI path started. It was there that I was first told that Eid wasn’t a day I should assume I could have off just because I was Muslim, especially as I “…have just had 10 days off for Christmas…”.I am working from a strategic and operational perspective. This involves contributing to the vision and strategy for the Federation, from the planning stage to implementation.#diversity #inclusion #equality #equity #intersectionality #adultification # LGBTQright #transrights #beingbrown #getuncomfortabletalkingaboutrace

My work at BBA allows me to use the toolkit I have created through my experience of working with young people and their families who are disengaged from education for various reasons. I work daily with 11-16 year old, their families and support agencies, to ensure attendance at the Academy is maintained. I run intervention groups and parenting workshops, in addition to being part of a strong and proactive safeguarding team.

Following the merger between City of Bath College and Norton Radstock College, the Alternative KS4 Provision was reluctantly cut from the new Bath College offer. This meant redundancy for me. At this point, I decided a career break was in order. Now I am fully refresed and ready to go and looking for my next challenge.
  • City Of Bath College
    Alternative Provision Manager
City Of Bath College Apr 2007 - Aug 2016
    Bath, United Kingdom
Following the merger between The City of Bath College and Radstock College, it was decided that the new Bath College would no longer offer an alternative KS4 provision. Essentially, pre-16 students would not be take on to full-time course. As a direct result, I was made redundant. Following the redundancy, I decided a career break was in order. Having had nearly a year off, I'm feeling refresed & ready to go again. My role involved the management of pre-16 placements at the College. The provision available to our young people included p/t & f/t provision. The provision was aimed at 14-16 year old who were disengaged from mainstream education for a number of reasons.Educational Behaviour Dufficulties(EBD) were historically prominant reasons for referrals, although, over the past 2-3 years we have seen a rise in young people with late diagnosis of ASD, ADHD, ADD, Anxiety etc. I liaised with Heads, Deputy & Assistant Heads as well as other school staff, including Pastoral Managers, SENCO, CMEOs etc to ensure placements were successful. I also work closely with Social Services, YOT, support agencies including Project 28, CAMHS etc. Day-to-day with students I managed engagement, behaviour, attendance, making sure they stay on target to achieve. I managed a staff team of support workers and course leaders. I also worked with staff on curriculum prep for Under 16's, profiling and strategies to engage. In addition, l was a Lead Safeguarding Person. I took referrals, worked across the board internally &externally to support students &staff who wereat risk. Day-to-day I deal with cases of abuse, self-harm, bullying, neglect, homelessness etc. In addition, I deliveredLevel 1 Safeguarding training within an FE setting. I hold an advanced CP certificate. Other training within safeguarding includes:Young People Who a Display Harmful Sexual BehaviourNeglectToxic TrioE-Safety In A Digital WorldUnderstanding ASDPreventPathwaysUnderstanding Self Harm in Young People
