After a three-year hiatus from grassroots organizing and civic engagement, I rediscovered my passion for this work in the spring of 2024. From 2018 to 2021, just a few months before studying abroad, this line of work was a significant part of my identity. I couldn’t be more excited to reconnect with the causes that are near and dear to my heart and contribute to meaningful change. “TurnUp” Activism can be described as a dynamic youth-led movement harnessing the power of technology and social media to mobilize young people for civic engagement, social justice, and political change. Focused on amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities, TurnUp encourages activism through education, advocacy, and grassroots organizing. It empowers individuals to take meaningful action on issues such as climate change, racial equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and voter participation, fostering a more inclusive and engaged society through digital platforms and community-driven campaigns.

Amman, Jordan

This unique service abroad opportunity immerses students in the purpose, mission, and workings of a locally operated humanitarian healthcare agency by having the humble privilege of volunteering at Jordan Health Aid Society International (JHASI) aiding Syrian refugees in Za’atari Camp. Many themes included Family Planning, Nutrition; Climate Change, Water Scarcity, and Health; Refugees and Mental Health; Nonprofit Management and Leadership; and Legal Aid Awareness. There were many weekend and cultural excursions, we walked through Petra, swam in the Dead Sea, explored the ancient city of Jerash, saw the beauty of Ajloun Castle and its many cats, traveled back in time to the mosaic city of Madaba, Mount Nebo, and the Baptism Site (personally my favorite excursion), had our shining star moment at the Roman Amphitheatre, conquered the Citadel, rode camels and laughed our through Wadi Rum, water hiked and tackled Wadi Mujib, and spent a day in the coastal city of Aqaba which greatly reminded me of the New England town that “The Summer I Turned Pretty” took place in. By the time my 6 weeks were ending, I began calling the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan my second home. This transformative experience has significantly shaped my perspective and skills for future opportunities.

The Muslim-Jewish Solidarity Committee, based in New York City, is a grassroots organization driven by the shared values of peace, learning, and charity within the Muslim and Jewish communities. Over the course of a nine-month fellowship, I cultivated deep connections with members of both communities across the United States, uniting to combat hatred through mutual understanding and interfaith dialogue.

Our campaign focused on recruiting dedicated individuals enthusiastic about innovative and forward-thinking politics, eager to contribute their efforts to elect a young and progressive leader.
