It was a fully funded MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering. As a part of my thesis, I developed two hybrid force prediction models for sea ice floes using Machine Learning based image processing techniques. Instead of using analytical or numerical approaches, the hybrid models directly extract floe characteristics from the images and later train Machine Learning based force predictors using those extracted floe parameters. Recurrent Convolutional Neural Networks (RCNN), Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Feed Forward Neural Networks (FFNN) are used in the development of these models. The improved ice image processing technique proposed in my thesis can extract useful ice properties from a closely connected, unevenly illuminated floe field with various floe sizes and shapes.
