GMT Production (The Arabic Channel TV) New York, NY Jun 1996- Nov 2002Position: Translator/Editor/News DirectorThe first day I came to the Arabic Channel TV station for an interview to work as a translator, I was given the job after taking a test. Curiously, my employer took the whole test, which was three long passages about the war in Bosnia Herzegovina and the status quo in the Middle East, and immediately used all the three passages in the news that evening. My job was to translate and edit the news, which we received first by fax then later via the Internet from the APTN SPELL OUT. I also had to translate information about sports. In the summer of 1998, I was given the opportunity to create the World One Minute News (Minute News) which I composed every day. By the end the same year, I was promoted to the position of Chief of the news desk in TAC SPELL OUT. I then had greater responsibilities where I had to prioritize my duties on a daily basis. First, I had to make sure that all the stories were translated and edited. Also, part of my duties was to make sure that the voice-over for the stories was recorded correctly, including the sound bites. I created the Minute News in conjunction with appropriate footage that was received earlier via a fiber optic device from the APTN. I Trained new anchorpersons and oversaw their performance during news coverage hours. I helped prepare interviews on various geopolitics and culture issues either with Arab Embassies, Arab organizations such as the Arab League, or VIPs who occasionally visited the USA.
