During my work placement in the eastern region of Abu Dhabi, I had the opportunity to delve deep into power distribution systems. Visiting distribution substations, I witnessed firsthand the operation of step-down transformers converting high voltage to low voltage for distribution. Alongside my instructor, I explored various electrical equipment like Quadrilateral Ring Main Units (QRMs) and Triangular Ring Main Units (TRMs), gaining practical skills.One memorable experience was encountering a Street-light Control (ST) system, strategically distributing power to streetlights. Another highlight was exploring a package unit with TRM, transformer, and feeder pillar sections, showcasing a systematic approach to distribution.Participating in a topographic survey of manholes emphasized the importance of infrastructure mapping for utility planning. Documenting 22kV route indications for electrical lines was particularly crucial for ensuring safety and network integrity.In my final weeks, I worked in a distribution substation operating at 22/0.415kV, where strict safety standards were enforced due to high-voltage equipment. Additionally, I gained insights into primary 33/11kV substations, vital for transforming high-voltage electricity for end-users.My exposure to various overhead transmission lines, ranging from 11kV to 400kV, provided a comprehensive understanding of their role in efficient electricity transmission.Overall, my work placement offered invaluable experience in power distribution systems, safety protocols, and infrastructure management, significantly enhancing my understanding of electrical engineering practices.

International House Philadelphia (IHP) is a +100 years old nonprofit organization that supports and builds community for students and scholars from around the world who choose to make Philadelphia their home away from home. When I worked there, there were 8 dorm floors and 8 Resident Advisors. Each Resident Advisor managed one floor of two student dorms. Work had daily night routine, on-call night shifts, weekly and monthly checklist. Work required carrying out day-to-day duties accurately and efficiently. Resident advisors have to quickly learn and apply new skills to successfully deliver on tasks within tight deadlines. Resident Advisors must demonstrate respect and care for all residents from all backgrounds since the IHP is the place where international student feel most welcome to.
