I am an associate consultant for this communications and media agency, working on private and public sector contracts in West Africa.

I steered a successful bid for a tender issued by the Government of Côte d'Ivoire for a World Bank funded behaviour change communications campaign. I co-wrote the bid, devised the budget and led negotiations with the Government. Contracts have been signed and activity has begun.

In conjunction with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Wheeler Foundation, this three-year project will soon publish the results of a three year randomised cluster control trial into the impact and cost-effectiveness of mass media campaigns on infant and maternal mortality. The aim is to demonstrate scientifically that public health campaigns through the media can save lives more cost effectively than most other interventions. In the process, we built the capacity and energy infrastructure of local radio stations in Burkina Faso while conducting public health campaigns through daily broadcasting of radio spots and long format programming. I trained radio station personnel in long format programming and launched a daily two-hour magazine in 7 regions and 6 languages of Burkina. I provided ongoing support for the radio teams and produced monitoring and evaluation tools to ensure continuous improvement and provide a core of data the organisation could use as evidence of its interventions. We worked with over 1000 young people annually, making 26 hours of original TV programmes each year but, more importantly, engaging them in educational activity with a purpose, Many clients were referred from agencies dealing with problematic young people who had been failed by the formal education system. Courses included standard aspects of youth and community work: advocacy, counselling, managing youth centres, developing youth centre provision etc; but I also innovated by bringing in courses on how to work with voluntary organisations, voluntary sector management and using new technology in youth work.
